Review
"World Vision president Richard Stearns shares scripture and inspiring stories of people who make a difference to encourage a renewed sense of passion, meaning, and purpose in all Christians. The book explains the Christian response to God's invitation to be part of His greater work, which Stearns describes as finding one's own unique calling. With warmth and clarity, narrator Wayne Shepherd explains why patience and faithfulness are necessary in a journey of self-discovery. He perfectly renders Stearns's counsel to live the teachings of scripture because that effort is how listeners will find their unique callings. Stearns also criticizes consumer-oriented churches that entice attendance with latte bars or Vegas-style music, efforts that he believes are contrary to biblical teachings." G.D.W. AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2013]

A pleasant surprise, a deep and abiding call
By Dawn M.
As a theology student, I appreciated the biblical grounding and the prophetic voice of this book, it is exactly what the church needs. Two things struck me about this book, it's the strong call to action that the Christian world needs and it's a pleasant surprise for a second book. In the sophomore offering where most authors downshift, Rich Stearns instead has doubled-down on the message from The Hole in Our Gospel, turning his personal message outward to those who are sitting on the sidelines. His message: get in the game and find the significance you long for. There is a lot of kingdom work still undone, and we need to get to it. I was inspired and moved to stop doing the 'spiritual bodybuilding' that only benefits me, and get out there and exercise some muscle on behalf of the kingdom. A great book for anyone!

good read with misplaced emphasis
By B. Dempsey
There has been a rash of "total commitment" books published in the last few years. Books like Radical and Crazy Love have called for American Christians to rethink how the Gospel should affect how they live. Unfinished is a similar work in that it makes a clarion call for believers to completely sell out for Christ. Another key vein of writing within the Christian publishing tradition has become the theme of social justice and how the Gospel should affect society in that regard. Stearns ties the two together, much as he did in his first book, tying very closely the concepts of complete devotion to Christ and working towards social justice and poverty alleviation.
The book nailed it on a few points. The American church overall is in a bad way. We have neglected the Great Commission, and our churches are shrinking because we have allowed our walks with Christ to decline and lose their fervency. A call to restore passionate discipleship is needed and welcome, and Stearns provides it. The book also brings a greater awareness of the needs around the world that can be met through the outreach of missions. There is much to be commended.
However, there are a few areas of concern, much as there were with The Hole on our Gospel. Stearns frequent emphasis on advancing the kingdom in some places seems to confuse the Great Commission's advancement (through the making of disciples) with the advancement of kingdom morals through social justice. This comes to a head on page 53, when Stearns refers to the Great Commission as "nothing less than a calling to partner with God in establishing a new world order. This was the mission." If this is the measuring stick, then the church has indeed failed, and that miserably. Stearns also seems to lay fault for the delay in the Second Coming at the feet of the church- thus the title of the book. Once the task is finished, the End will come. These are two major weaknesses that distract from the beneficial call to discipleship. Christians need to keep in perspective that everything ultimately comes back to the Gospel and the call to make disciples to the glory of God. Everything else serves to advance the Gospel. Our social work is necessary, for it shows our faith- it does not contribute to a political empire, but reflects the love of the Savior to a world that desperately needs the light of redemption.

Metaskills: Five Talents for the Robotic Age, by Marty Neumeier

"A rousing manifesto of mastery in a connected world." –Google

The Industrial Age has taught us how to break problems into parts, but not how to build parts into solutions. We’re baffled when we’re confronted with complex challenges like recession, political gridlock, climate change, childhood obesity, pollution, and failing schools. We see them as separate ills, each requiring a separate remedy—if we can imagine a remedy at all.

Why are so many jobs disappearing? Why are a few people getting rich while the rest of us struggle? How can we pay for the costs of healthcare? Why can’t our trusted institutions behave ethically? What’s the cause of governmental gridlock? How can we afford to educate our children? How do we stop damaging the ecosystem? Why do we create ugliness?

Author Marty Neumeier suggests that these problems are merely symptoms of a much larger problem–our inability to deal with interconnected, non-linear, and amorphous challenges. It’s not that our problems are too difficult, he argues, but that our skills are too basic. Success in the post-industrial era demands that we move our thinking from the static, the linear, and the step-by-step to the dynamic, the holistic, and the all-at-once.

In this sweeping vision for personal mastery in a post-industrial era, Neumeier presents five metaskills–feeling, seeing, dreaming, making, and learning–that can help you reach your true potential. They’ll keep you two or three steps ahead of the machines, the algorithms, and the outsourcing forces of the “robot curve”. They’ll also bring you greater creativity, higher purpose, and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Metaskills is more than a manifesto. It’s a compass for visionary leaders, policymakers, educators, and planners. It’s a creative framework for designers, engineers, scientists, and artists. It’s a picture of the future that allows people from a wide range of disciplines, industries, and professions to envision new ways to create value together. Perhaps more important, it’s a long-overdue examination of what it means to be human in the 21st century.

"Help! A robot ate my job!" If you haven't heard this complaint yet, you will.
Today's widespread unemployment is not a jobs crisis. It's a talent crisis. Technology is taking every job that doesn't need a high degree of creativity, humanity, or leadership. The solution? Stay on top of the Robot Curve--aconstant waterfall of obsolescence and opportunity fed by competition and innovation. Neumeier presents five metaskills--feeling, seeing, dreaming, making, and learning--that will accelerate your success in the Robotic Age.

About the Author

Marty Neumeier is a designer, writer, and business adviser whose mission is to bring the principles and processes of creativity to industry. His recent series of “whiteboard” books includes The Designful Company, about the role of design in corporate innovation; Zag, named one of the “top hundred business books of all time” for its insights into radical differentiation; and The Brand Gap, considered by many the foundational text for modern brand-building.

In the 1990s Neumeier was editor and publisher of Critique magazine, the first journal about design thinking. He has also worked closely with innovative companies such as Apple, Netscape, Sun Microsystems, HP, Adobe, Google, and Microsoft to help advance their brands and cultures. Today he serves as Director of Transformation for Liquid Agency in Silicon Valley, and travels extensively as a workshop leader and speaker on the topics of innovation, brand, and design. Between trips, he and his wife spend their time in California and southwest France.

A must read, and live up to!
By Annette
We are undergoing a paradigm shift, and many do not notice! We move from the industrial age into what's next, and many still hope to find a job at the conveyor belt! And those who notice, maybe because their job was eaten by a robot, are left behind, because they lack the competence to participate in the new economy.

Surely not every industrial activity will cease to exist, but in his new book "Meta Skills" Marty Neumeier illustrates a reality that is a given fact: the industrial age is eating its children and the only way out is to stay ahead of what he calls "the robot curve". In doing this, Neumeier proposes to rely on skills that in nowadays economy almost are regarded as "inappropriate" - to be able to make and create. He calls these skill our "Meta Skills": feeling, seeing, dreaming, making and learning.

Neumeier's "Meta Skills" is a very entertaining read: well written it does deliver an enormous wealth of references, thoughts, anecdotes and very well thought through approaches and proposals. Unlike his first three so-called "white board overviews" - which made impact through strong synopsis and visual presentation - Meta Skills is digging deep into the subjects and features reduced, but nevertheless impactful visuals. Very strong is the chapter in which he addresses the skill of "seeing" and relates it to the recently hyped "design thinking", or better systems thinking: to be able to see the world in a way that allows one to anticipate, rather then to react, is a skill needed to improve it for the better. The approaches Neumeier provide to develop each skill are insightful and practical - in the end you could call them common sense, which make you wonder why we are struggling to pick up on them.

As an educator I am also impressed with the strong appeal Neumeier makes for the improvement of our education system, moving it away from the multiple choice "achievement" focus, towards one where pupils (and any of us) are encouraged to truly "master" a subject. This book is a must-read for educators and all those, who want to turn the world into a better place!
Hope the book is going to be translated into German and other languages as well.

How and why metacognition (highly-developed "knowing about knowing") requires mastery of metaskills
By Robert Morris
J. H. Flavell was probably the first to use the term metacognition when suggesting that it "refers to one's knowledge concerning one's own cognitive processes or anything related to them, e.g., the learning-relevant properties of information or data. For example, I am engaging in metacognition if I notice that I am having more trouble learning A than B; if it strikes me that I should double check C before accepting it as fact." That was in 1976.

What we have 36 years later, in Marty Neumeier's latest book, is a brilliant examination of metaskills within the context of a global business world that is increasingly more complicated, confusing, frustrating, and uncertain than at any prior time that I can remember. Neumeier calls it the "Robotic Age" while noting that today's robots are, at best, early prototypes of what are certain to become far more sophisticated than we can possibly imagine now. Human beings must develop both the nature and extent of their mental capabilities (e.g. cognition) if they are to control rather than be controlled by the advanced technologies that await. How to do that? In a word, "metaskills" and Neumeier identifies and discusses five:

FEELING (e.g. intuition, empathy, and social intelligence)
SEEING (i.e. the ability to think, whole thoughts, also known as systems thinking)
DREAMING (the metaskill of applied imagination)
MAKING (i.e. master the design process, including skills for devising prototypes of, for example, robots)
LEARNING (the audodidactic ability to learn new skills at will)

Note: This last talent or metaskill is perhaps the most important, in my opinion, because we cannot understand what is beyond our ability to recognize, process, and assimilate. To paraphrase Albert Einstein, we cannot solve problems with the mental skills that created them. Neumeier would hasten to add that we will also need highly developed skills to achieve metaintuition. (That is the subject for another book I hope he writes.)

These are among the passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to give at least some indication of the range of subjects that Neumeier covers:

o The Innovation Mandate (Pages 8-11)
o The Obsolete Industrial Brain and Wanted: Metaskills (24-30)
o Brain Surgery, Self-Taught (39-45)
o Leonardo's Assistant (54-57)
o The Aesthetics Toolbox (70-71)
o Thinking Whole Thought (95-98)
o The Art Is in the Framing (130-136)
o The Play Instinct (154-163)
o The Art of Simplexity (191-193)
o The Joy Zone (209-213)
o A Theory of Learning (217-220)
o Unplugging (226-228)

With all due respect to J. H. Flavell's importance, the first time I encountered the term (metacognition) was years later when, quite by accident, I was browsing through a friend's copy of Metacognition: Knowing about Knowing, published by MIT Press (1994) and co-edited by Janet Metcalfe and Arthur P. Shimamura. I mention all this by way of suggesting that Marty Neumeier's most recently published book enables a layman such as I to appreciate (if not as yet fully understand) the exciting opportunities that await all of us in a relatively new field of cognitive science. We now know more about knowing than ever before but, I suspect, the process has only begun. Hence the great importance -- and significance -- of the contributions that Neumeier makes with this book.

In the final chapter, Neumdeier offers what he calls "A Modest Proposal." He recommends a seven-step process by which to end and then reverse a process of sacrificing our children to "the gods of mass production." The details of this process are best revealed within the narrative, in context, but I feel comfortable noting that his ultimate objective (and an admirable one indeed) is to transform the education of young people so that (yes) they can more quickly -- Swiftly? -- master metaskills and thereby (a) achieve metacognition and also (b) become more fully developed human beings with sharper minds, kinder hearts, and healthier bodies. My own take is that, indeed, everything Neumeier affirms can nourish quality of life. If there is anything else more important than that, I sure would like to know.

That said, no brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the scope of material that Marty Neumeier provides in this volume but I hope that I have at least suggested why I think so highly of him and his work. Also, I hope that those who read this commentary will be better prepared to determine whether or not they wish to read the book and, in that event, they will have at least some idea of how the information, insights, and counsel could perhaps be responsive to the needs, interests, and especially the challenges to the given organization.

Great illustrations, average story line
By Dainis Kundzinsh
The illustrations and the way Marcos layed down the whole visual story line is not less than epic, a truly experienced professional who knows every aspect of story telling and knows exactly how to convey ideas and stories into drawings.
I bought this book so I can learn how to make comic/graphic novel as good as he does, together with "Framed ink" you get yourself a really good education on composition for story telling.

The storyline itself in this novel is OK, nothing that exciting but non the less executed superbly, that is why I give it 5 stars.

Cinematic and dramatic storytelling
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo5CYRJL8NK320]]Trail of Steel: 1441 A.D. is the graphic novel by Marcos Mateu Mestre. His previous book Framed Ink covers storytelling in graphic form.

This graphic novel uses the techniques he has taught. The story happens in the winter of 1441 A.D. in Spain. A father and his son are on a mission to find some people who pissed off the lady.

The tale unfolds in a cinematic and dramatic manner. Art is amazing. It's in black and white but with the masterful composition, it really gets you close to the action. Characters are carefully placed, directed, and every panel is like a study of tonal value. This book is a good example how powerful composition can be used for storytelling.

At the end of the book are some sketches and his thoughts on the story.

Highly recommended. And definitely check out Framed Ink if you haven't.

The book is available in paperback and hardcover.

sequential genius
By devilmonkey
Well, I've been through this three times in the last two days. First one was a whirlwind, second time I slowed it down and now I'm going through picking apart each page panel by panel. And boy, is it worth it.
Each page is a masterclass in sequential layout, and each panel within is lesson in composition.
This book is brilliant and should be an essential 'text book' in any artist's library.
And if you haven't got Framed Ink by Marcos, buy that now, too.

Pathways to the Common Core: Accelerating Achievement, by Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, Christopher Lehman

"As challenging as it must have been to write and finesse the adoption of the Common Core State Standards, that accomplishment is nothing compared to the work of teaching in ways that bring all students to these ambitious expectations. The goal is clear. The pathway is not."
-Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, and Christopher Lehman

The Common Core is written, but the plan for implementing the Common Core is not.

Lucy Calkins and her colleagues at the Reading and Writing Project have helped thousands of educators design their own pathways to the Common Core. Now, with Pathways to the Common Core, they are ready to help you find your way.

Designed for teachers, school leaders, and professional learning communities looking to navigate the gap between their current literacy practices and the ideals of the Common Core, Pathways to the Common Core will help you:
* understand what the standards say, suggest, and what they don't say;
* recognize the guiding principles that underpin the reading and writing standards;
* identify how the Common Core's infrastructure supports a spiraling K-12 literacy curriculum; and
* scrutinize the context in which the CCSS were written and are being unrolled.

In addition to offering an analytical study of the standards, this guide will also help you and your colleagues implement the standards in ways that lift the level of teaching and learning throughout your school. Specifically, it will help you:
* become a more critical consumer of the "standards-based" mandates that are flooding your desk;
* craft instruction that supports students in reading more complex texts, developing higher level
comprehension skills, and writing at the ambitious levels of the CCSS;
* develop performance assessments and other tools to propel Common Core reforms; and
* create systems of continuous improvement that are transparent, collegial, and accountable.

Above all, this book will help you interpret the Common Core as a rallying cry that ignites deep, wide and lasting reforms and, most importantly, accelerates student achievement.

Review
I love Pathways to the Common Core! The way it explains how the standards work will correct many misconceptions and go a long way toward changing literacy instruction for the better, a primary intent of the standards. It will help people know how to read the standards, and will help teachers see how they already address this new view of comprehension and what more they need to do. This book is an amazing reference for any teacher working to accelerate student achievement, and it is a must-read for those facing the challenge levels of the Common Core State Standards.
---Sally Hampton, member of the writing team for the Common Core ELA standards and member of the Pearson Foundation curriculum design team

With piercing insights, Calkins, Ehrenworth, and Lehman dive deep into the CCSS to debunk myths, extract meaning, and provide needed guidance for each and every standard. Pathways to the Common Core is a necessity for the principal, curriculum leader, professional developer, and teacher seeking a thorough analysis of the standards from which to launch an informed approach to this critical initiative.
---Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs, author, consultant, and director of the Curriculum 21 Project

Teachers across the country yearn for a road map to navigate the Common Core State Standards. Search no more. Pathways to the Common Core is the CCSS GPS. The authors do a thorough, extensive analysis of every aspect of the ELA CCSS. Pathways charts a course for effective, thoughtful teaching and top-notch student learning. I was blown away by this smart, artful, enthralling book.
---Stephanie Harvey, educator and co-author of the Comprehension Toolkit series

While acknowledging the ambivalence swirling around the Common Core State Standards, Pathways to the Common Core takes a proactive stance, encouraging us to scrutinize the standards carefully and accept the challenge to raise expectations for all children s literacy learning. It reminds us that it is up to schools and districts to decide how to implement the standards and choose our own way forward.
---Ellin Keene, consultant and author of Talk About Understanding

I began reading Pathways to the Common Core in my favorite chair, music playing, dinner cooking on the stove. I ll just read a couple of chapters, I thought. I finished the book hours later, sitting at my desk, a legal pad filled with notes of all I had learned, and hungry for conversation with colleagues (and for dinner that had long-ago burned). Pathways to the Common Core sets you on a path for thinking more deeply about the standards, for teaching more inventively with the standards, and for helping students achieve the goals of the standards.
---Kylene Beers, consultant and author of When Kids Can t Read

The success of the Common Core State Standards will depend largely on how teachers implement them and whether they are able to resist narrow interpretations that could lead to increased failure rates and achievement gaps. In the hands of informed teachers the standards could promote deeper thinking and higher classroom performance. Read Pathways to the Common Core and be informed. --

Let s take up that challenge.
---Lester L. Laminack, author, educator, consultant

Calkins, Ehrenworth, and Lehman have taken up the challenge of the Common Core standards in a most valuable way. Pathways to the Common Core provides a context for teachers and administrators to advance productive instructional strategies while offering the critical language and logic needed to stand up to unfortunate interpretations and nonsense.
---Peter Johnston, Professor, The University at Albany

Pathways to the Common Core invites teachers and principals to welcome the Common Core standards and take them seriously, while recognizing them as a substantial challenge to business as usual. It offers wise advice on how to move ahead, building on strength and engaging the entire school community in a joint effort of continuous improvement. The authors know no one yet has all the answers for reaching such ambitious goals, and suggest deep suspicion of anyone who claims otherwise. It is must reading for responsible educators, and it wouldn't hurt if policymakers took a look as well.
---Fritz Mosher, Senior Research Consultant, Consortium for Policy Research in Education and the Center for Continuous Instructional Improvement

I love it when I sit down to view a table of contents and end up reading the whole book. Pathways to the Common Core is the most useful unpacking of the Common Core State Standards available to date. Lucy, Mary, and Chris help us understand what the standards emphasize and how this emphasis might lead us down different paths of instruction than we ve taken before. With generous wisdom and experience, they help us keep one eye on rigor and the other on meaningful reading and writing.
---Gretchen Owocki, Ph.D., Director, Reading and Writing Clinic, Saginaw Valley State University

Some of our most valuable resources in supporting a child s journey toward college and career readiness are the teachers who propel that journey. If the standards specify what every child needs to know and be able to do to be college or career ready, then Pathways to the Common Core specifies what every educator needs to know and be able to do to implement the ELA standards effectively.
---Meghan Berry, CPS, K 5 Writing Content Lead, Office of Reading and Language Arts, Chicago

While the standards may be daunting and technical, I am inspired by the way Pathways to the Common Core eases the reader through the concerns we all feel and supports us as we come together to take an honest look at our instructional practices and create systems that will accelerate student achievement. This book is encouraging and supportive; I feel prepared to roll up my sleeves and get to work alongside my staff. --
Liz Tetreault, Principal, Port Salerno Elementary School, FL

Combining research, experience, and common sense, Pathways to the Common Core is a GPS providing step-by-step navigation through the new Common Core standards. It is a must-read for teachers, administrators, and instructional leaders looking to effectively implement the standards.
---Dr. Tom Bulla, Director of Elementary Education, Union County Public Schools, NC

Pathways to the Common Core is a road map for school leaders and teachers looking to navigate the bends and twists encountered in implementing the Common Core State Standards. It is the perfect blend of instructional theory and classroom practice. This book has already become my most important resource.
---Christine Capaci, Principal, West Windsor Plainsboro Regional School District, Village School, NJ

If after reading, rereading, and discussing the CCSS you continue to grapple with how they change or support current practices in your district, school, or classroom, read Pathways to the Common Core. Follow Lucy, Mary, and Christopher s critical examination of the standards and you will be empowered to approach curricular alignment with richer perspective, clearer purpose, and greater confidence.
---Rochelle DeMuccio, Coordinator ELA and Reading, Half Hollow Hills Schools, NY

At last a book that inspires educators to raise their sights above the politics of the Common Core and focus instead on the unprecedented opportunity these new standards create. Loaded with practical examples, Pathways to the Common Core provides detailed explanations of the standards and thoughtful considerations for implementation. It will propel educators toward the rigorous, ambitious teaching that can truly accelerate student achievement.
---Dr. Erin McGurk, Director of Educational Services, Ellington Public Schools, CT

Lucy, Mary, and Christopher take us on an intellectual journey inside the Common Core State Standards, pausing to examine each standard with the eyes of teachers in real classrooms. Brilliant and accessible, Pathways to the Common Core gives a voice to our profession and invites us to reflect on the Common Core State Standards as an opportunity for collaboration and celebration.
---Lydia Bellino, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Cold Spring Harbor Central School District, NY

Once again Lucy and the Reading & Writing Project blaze a trail for us all this time as we enter the new terrain of the Common Core. Pathways to the Common Core helps teachers recognize that this work is not new; rather, it takes what we have already been doing and provides a road map for ways to make the work deeper and more rigorous.
---Phyllis Harrington, Ed.D., Superintendent, Oyster Bay East Norwich Central School District, NY

Lucy, Mary, and Chris have decrypted the CCSS. Pathways to the Common Core is a must-have addition to every educator s library.
---Vincent M. Iturralde, Principal, Tarkington School of Excellence, Chicago

Engaging and intriguing, Pathways to the Common Core reads like a novel. You won t want to put it down.
---Sheila R. Cole, Ed.D, Principal, Franklin School, NJ

Pathways to the Common Core is not a love letter to the CCSS; instead, it is a critical dissection of the standards focusing on what they include, what they marginalize, what is neglected, and what is ineffective. It shows what the standards look like in practice. --

A Newly-Windexed Window into the Common Core
By Ken C.
Already, before they've even been implemented, the words "common" and "core" have moved into our schools, unpacked their stuff, and begun to act in general like they own the joint. Where exactly did these standards come from and what do they mean to teachers, administrators, parents, and students?

Ask no more. PATHWAYS TO THE COMMON CORE is 197 pages of concise elucidation, making it one book you'd love to put into the hands of everyone associated with education. With its short introduction, the book claims we can bicker and carp about the new standards or we can look for the silver lining and make something of them -- something that can actually help our students. From there, Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, and Christopher Lehman take us on a tour through the reading, writing, and speaking/listening and language standards, laying it on the line in simple terms: This is what they say, this is what they DON'T say, and this is what they mean for us if we're going to do the job right.

One interesting implication of the CCSS is how they bring us back to the heyday (30s and 40s) of the New Criticism, when text was king. Close analysis of text is back, meaning some common (and beloved) practices associated with reader response will be downgraded and outright eliminated. Included in this would be practices like connections to self and accessing students' background knowledge on a topic before starting a reading. The Common Core has little patience for such truck, instead asking students to read, retell key points in the text and, once understanding is established, move on to interpretation of key ideas and analysis of structure. Somewhat confusing still is the CCSS architects' suggested texts -- almost all classics -- which go against the authors' suggestion that children enjoy choice in reading selections -- almost all YA lit works. It appears the two can be done at the same time, but to my mind, using classics as the sole means of "increasingly complex text" might lead to additional hits for Spark Notes and sites of its ilk. More exciting is the CCSS's advocacy of contemporary journalism and feature writing, especially on topics of high interest to students. Some good writing is going on in contemporary journalism and nonfiction texts, and it is with open arms that we should be receiving these works into the classroom.

While the work of English teachers is daunting, it's nothing compared to the work of the content area teachers. In fact, this is the greatest danger lying ahead for the CCSS. It rightly promotes much more reading and writing and the in-house DOING of both. The trouble is, there aren't enough hours in the school day if it's to happen solely on the English teachers' watch. Instead the CCSS depend upon science, social studies, and even math teachers assuming some of the load by assigning much more informational and persuasive text as well performing more writing in their classes. Will these teachers take the task on, set aside process-writing time in their classrooms, and collect class sets of papers, thus walking a mile in the English teachers' shoes when they are already stretched to the max with their own curricula? The answer is in the question, I fear, unless there is a huge shift in educational thinking and the content area teachers take a serious look at how their teaching priorities must evolve.

Complete with examples of how the CCSS might be implemented and what it might look like in classrooms, PATHWAYS TO THE COMMON CORE is a bit of a no-brainer in the buy or don't buy department. If nothing else, administrators and curriculum leaders should read it, but it's really not going to have an impact unless teachers read it and buy in, too. Informational text itself, this book is clear, concise, and a wake-up call of sorts. If you thought you understood the CCSS because, well, they seem simple and straightforward enough, read this book and think again. I did, and I feel like my eyes are open for the first time, I have a much better picture, in other words, of what to do next as I move forward.

The Magic Book!
By Denise W. Schweikart
Picture this... You are sitting in your classroom dreaming of the summer at the beach and in walks the principal to hand you the newest copy of the Common Core Standards and tells you that you will implement these in your classroom next year. As you begin watching your dreams of the beach become a memory because of the standards and work you will need to do over the summer, you begin wishing for a magic book that would help you. You begin reading the standards only to find out that they are really confusing and you are not sure what they would look like in a lesson. More and more you want that magic book.

Well if you order this book you will have found the magic book or the best source to use for understanding the Common Core. The book is set up to walk you through each domain of the standards and give you a more in depth look at what they really want the children to be able to accomplish. As you start reading the book you will realize that the authors have a vast understanding of the standards and how they influence teaching. They use a mentor text and show you what it would like in a lesson using the new standards and the level of rigor that the lesson should have.

As I read it the first time, I began creating questions in my head (and on post its) and I was amazed that all of my questions were answered before I finished the book. I love the way that the information is presented to new learners. After you read the book once, it is helpful to go back to the Common Core and go back through them. Then, go back to the book and start rereading because as teachers know this is the key to understanding the text (multiple readings).

If you purchase this book trust me you will have a much better understanding of the expectations that the Common Core standards have placed on teachers and on children.

Like Them Or Not, Here They Come
By Kelly Gallagher
We all know there are problems with the CCSS, but this book gives me hope that the new standards can be used as a lever to improve our students' ability to read, write, speak, and think. Pathways to the Common Core is essential for any teacher, administrator, curriculum leader, and school board member who wants to get out ahead of the CCSS curve. A very smart book.
