A Must for Any Home Cook - Paleo or Not
By Yes to Yummy
I am a fifteen year-old aspiring chef, and I LOVE to cook--especially wholesome, healthy food. I have been a fan of Nom Nom Paleo for a while now, and I've been anxiously waiting for the cookbook's release since I pre-ordered back in June.

My expectations were way beyond exceeded. The cookbook itself is absolutely gorgeous--it has a big, solid cover, easily turnable pages, and beautiful pictures that really make you hungry! You'd never guess that this was a "paleo" cookbook: it looks (and is) very professional.

Whether you are an experienced chef or a newbie home cook, you'll find a recipe that's just right for you. There are simple dishes, like shrimp and watermelon skewers, that are perfect for quick weeknight dinners, and more complex dishes, like the Southwest Cowboy Chili, that are great projects for weekend culinary adventures. So far, I have made the Spicy Coconut Shrimp, Peruvian Spatchcocked Chicken, Slow-Cooker Kahlua Pig, Polpette di Vitello, and Egg Fo Young--all five have been tasty, easy to prepare, and really pretty on the plate. (My favorite so far? Hands-down the Peruvian Spatchcocked Chicken.) I'm also looking forward to trying the Slow-Cooker Korean Short Ribs, Devils on Horseback, Pistachio Apple Salad, and Crispy Gizzard Confit, among many others...I know I'll keep turning back to this cookbook for months to come.

One other review complained that the recipes were "too simple." In my opinion, we sometimes get so wrapped up in fancy, complicated preparations that we forget what tastes best: things like a warm baked sweet potato, slow-cooked roast beef, or a perfect hardboiled egg. Michelle's recipes have really inspired me to get back to basics and just enjoy the taste of simply prepared vegetables and protein.

I'd highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who is passionate about healthy food, from those just exploring paleo to old-time pros. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Umamilicious!
By LCW
This is one of the cookbooks I've been eagerly waiting for this year. When it finally arrived it did not disappoint. I've cooked from the author's blog for quite a while now so I had already made a few of the recipes in this book. Time hasn't permitted me to do a big cookup all at once but I've spent the past week slowly cooking my way through the book with delicious results.

My favorite thing about Michelle Tam's cooking style is that she uses a lot of ingredients that bring umami to your dish. Umami is that savory meaty flavor that comes from naturally occurring forms of glutamate (not to be confused with MSG...stay away from that junk) and a few other amino acids. It fires up your taste buds while filling your entire mouth with full deep flavor. You know those rich savory dishes that are just so incredibly delicious but you just can't quite put your finger on why? That's umami! Ingredients like mushrooms, beef, seaweed, fish sauce, tomato paste, caramelized onions are just a few of the ingredients that bring this special flavor to your dish and this cookbook is full of them.

The book begins with her and her husband's journey to Paleo, the basic 411 on what exactly Paleo is, as well her tips and tricks for running a kitchen as smoothly as possible. My favorite are the defrost bowl, which I've done forever and it's a huge time saver, as well as defrosting meat (wrapped in plastic...you don't want the water actually touching the meat) in water to defrost in a flash. I've done that for years but I always thought of it as my dirty little secret because I thought somehow it wasn't the safest or most sanitary thing. It was just too easy and convenient to stop though. My mind has been eased as it is apparently perfectly fine and safe. Yay!

I appreciate the fact that all of these recipes are actually Paleo and that the treat section is kept to a minimum. The recipes aren't full of copious amounts of sweeteners like maple syrup, dates, or honey. The author does use honey in a few but it's usually just a tablespoon or two. As someone who does a lower carb version of Paleo I can live with that small amount.

There are some non-recipe recipes that take up a lot of space. I prefer it when authors condense easy staples like zucchini noodles, mashed cauliflower, roasted squash, etc into a couple pages instead of each taking up the same space, or more, as a "real" recipe. Well Fed 2 does this perfectly. Still, I don't feel like these were added gratuitously to bulk up the book and I, as a reader, don't feel like I got conned into buying a book full of "recipes" for things like scrambled eggs and veggies, steamed broccoli, etc. For that reason this small nit pick doesn't merit any deductions in rating. It really is an excellent cookbook that is at the forefront of what is available in the genre right now.

There's a Building Blocks section full of condiments and ideas to quickly and easily boost the flavors of your meal. I love it when cookbooks put effort into things like this. Sometimes on a weeknight I just don't have the time to experiment with an entire recipe from scratch but sear or grill some meat with a fabulous new spice mix, sauce, or dressing and you have a delicious new culinary adventure on the table in minutes.

Despite this being a busy week I actually got to try out quite a few of her recipes (as well as having already cooked several from the blog) because so many are so fast and easy! Here's what I've made so far and what I thought of it:

-Dukkah: Love this blend. Initially I thought it was going to be too high of a spice to nut ratio but it actually works. It's delicious!

-Slow Roasted Tomatoes: Yum! This is a technique I knew about but never actually did. It's really fast as most of the work is done in the oven. I had them with a French Omelette (also in the book).

-Caramelized onions- I made a big batch of these to have them ready to add fast flavor to quick meals through the week. These do take some time and attention but do it all at once and enjoy them for several days.

-Ghee: I've been making ghee for years and I love it. This should be a staple in everyone's kitchen!!

-Macadamia Nut "Ricotta": It's like cashew "cheese" but with macadamia nuts. And fewer carbs with a healthier fat profile! Plus it tastes amazing!

-Citrus Vinaigrette: Bright tangy citrus flavors that light up your mouth. Super easy but super delicious!

-Devils On Horseback: Normally I don't do fussy little hors d'oeuvres type dishes but I already had the macadamia nut cheese and it looked really easy so I was like why the heck not. They are like bacon wrapped dates but better. They're not as sweet and a little more complex in flavor. An excellent idea!!

-Tomato and Basil Salad: I just so happened to have some nice heirloom tomatoes that needed to get used so this was perfect. Another fast easy dish that adds so much flavor.

-Madras Chicken Salad- Yum!! A delicious herby curried chicken salad. Some of these types of recipes get overwhelmed with the curry powder but this strikes the perfect balance of flavors. Next time I make this I'm going to try grapes in it! Or mango!

-Classic Coleslaw- A delicious version of a classic dish. The sesame seeds are the perfect touch and IMO they make the dish.

-Fast/Slow Pho- I did the slow method as I don't have a pressure cooker. I can't fully evaluate this recipe as I used subpar spices resulting in a bland broth. I ran out of my Penzy's coriander, which I love, so used coriander and star anise of questionable quality. I had to doctor up the broth to give it more flavor but I really think it was the spices I used. With the doctoring (garam masala, more ginger, and fresh lemon grass) it came out really good. It's a delicious idea and is a great lower carb dish for those of us watching carbs. Oh and I have an order in to Penzy's for more of the good stuff to try again. This is also not that much work. It's a set it and forget it type dish. ETA: It was definitely the crappy quality spices. Much improved with the good stuff from Penzy's. Although if you have fresh lemongrass it makes a delicious addition. I've made this 5-6 times since. I love it!!

-Thai and French Omelettes: I love that she included these. The french omelette is a good reminder to pay attention to technique. You will be rewarded with a delicious soft fluffy omelette. I used Penzy's Sunny Paris spice mix in it. The thai omlette is amazing. So simple but packed full of flavor. Both are fast and easy enough to make on a weekday morning.

-Broccoli Bagna Cauda: I love baugna cauda sauce but I've only ever had it on fish. This was a new idea that totally works!!

-Spicy Tuna Cakes: These make a delicious fast weeknight meal. I had them cold for brunch the next day too. I didn't have any sweet potatoes so I subbed pumpkin puree and it worked great. Fewer carbs too!

-Fiona's Green Chicken: This is a recipe from her blog that I've made many times. It's amazing. Bright, minty, citrusy, grassy and good! I've done it with grilled pork chops and it made a delicious turkey breast as well. It's a delicious and versatile staple for me.

-Crispy Smashed Chicken: This is the perfect weeknight meal. You can spice it up and top it however you want. I used Penzy's Arizona spice mix in the coating for the chicken and topped with pico de gallo. The cookbook recommends her Spicy Pineapple Salsa or Salsa Roja Asada (both are in the book). Either one sounds amazing and I am going to do the pineapple salsa next time!

-Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy: Another recipe from her blog I've made quite a few times. It's easy and delicious. The "gravy" is sensational and a good way to use up the veggies from the bottom of the roasting pan that I've previously always tossed. What a huge mistake I've been making!

-Slow Cooker Korean Short Ribs: Short ribs are my favorite cut of beef so I always have to try any new recipe for them. This is amazing. Sweet and savory beefy goodness! I've seen this recipe on her blog but never actually tried it until the book came. It's another fast "set it and forget it" type recipe. I made both this and the Pho in no time at all on weeknights.

-Big O Bacon Burgers: This is a big 'ol whollup of umami for your taste buds. So delicious! Luckily I made a big batch and froze individual patties now they'll be ready even faster next time.

-Loco Moco: I'm from HI and this is a staple there. Using the Big O Bacon burgers just ups the flavor even more. I subbed umami gravy for the slow cooker gravy because that's what I had in the fridge. Served with cauliflower rice it's pure paleo comfort food!! I top mine with Furikake as well.

-Cinnamon Apple Scones: These are on the authors blog and I've made them plain, with the apples, and with pears. All the variations came out amazing.

-Strawberry banana ice cream: Do I even need to tell anyone that this is delicious? Well it is. I've done all kinds of berries and frozen fruits as well.

For not having a ton of time this week I sure have made a lot of recipes from this book. This is one of those books where I literally want to make every single recipe. Soon up to try are the Crispy Confit Chicken Gizzards, Magic Mushroom Powder, Magic Poached Tuna, Kahlua Slow Cooker Pig, Eggplant "Ricotta" Stacks, Uova In Purgatorio (spicy meat sauce baked eggs), and the Coconut Pineapple Fried "Rice". I could go on and on!

Paleo or not this book is full of good food and would be a great addition to anyone's kitchen!

This book may bring your life more happiness than sriracha.
By Charles
I'm pretty sure this book is the most highly-anticipated cookbook to hit the market (Paleo or otherwise) in quite some time. Yes, we know, there are lots of Paleo books on the market (we have two, and an e-book). But this one, well it's different.

It was not super surprising to hear that Michelle Tam and Henry Fong were going to be unleashing even more deliciousness to the world via Nom Nom's eponymous masterpiece (Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans). Despite having been somewhat on the inside loop knowing that this book was coming out, to say that I was beyond amazed once I got to see the book in the flesh would be a gross understatement. As I am very much a visual learner, seeing recipes accompanied by sometimes as many as 12 or 15 step-by-step photos is immeasurably helpful, providing the home cook with some guidelines as to what they should be doing and how things should be looking at varying steps during the cooking process. And, not worrying about ruining my iPad with some kitchen foibles was an added bonus (as the iPad app also includes lovely step-by-step photos).

Michelle's personality, her spunk and kitchen knowledge come across in spades in this piece of art. While I hesitate to use the word "foodie" to describe Michelle and Henry (a term I think gets over-used and abused), I can say unequivocally that these two LOVE food, and it is absolutely evident in the book. Michelle's educational background in nutritional and food science not to mention the in-home exposure to really tasty eats thanks to growing up in her mom's kitchen provided a strong foundation for such a love of all things culinary. As Michelle even shared in a recent blog post, when she travels, food experiences are her priority (adding that she "canceled a visit to see Michaelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia because it got in the way of finding the best bollito misto in Florence"). It's this obsession with food that takes Nom Nom Paleo: Food For Humans to the next level.

While the over 100 recipes are fun, delicious and very often simple and easy to make, the animations and the special sections detailing everything from tool time to 20 tips to get you started in the kitchen to feeding kids this way to a fun cartoon about how Michelle lives her life as a blogger, mom, wife and nightshift working pharmacist are a visual feast and a veritable treasure trove for anyone and everyone - not just those living the Paleo lifestyle. While the book has Paleo in the title, this book deserves a place on just about every kitchen shelf (okay, maybe not a vegan's, as they might not like the gorgeous pictures of Michelle learning to butcher a cow).

What about the quality of the actual recipes, you say? Well, so far we've made homemade sriracha, siu yoke, kabalagala (plantain fritters) and none have disappointed. We've also bookmarked at least a dozen more we plan on making in the next week or two. For the complete listing of all the recipes included in the book, go to their whole page about the book and click on the section that says "Which recipes are in this book?" Not to mention so many of the recipes in the book are Whole30 compliant (and if you need more Whole30 inspiration you can check out the Nom Nom Paleo site where there are even MORE Whole30 recipes to send you on your merry way).

Still not convinced that you need this book in your life or to give it as a gift? Michelle and Henry are such giving sorts that they have a whole 50 page free downloadable preview for you. Go check it out ([...] all you buyers who need to test-drive something before you buy. Trust us when we say you want this book. You need this book. This book might bring you more happiness than sriracha (well, at the very least it will bring you the happiness that is sriracha via her homemade recipe).

Disclosure: we received an advance copy of this book, and have had a few weeks to test drive some of the recipes and pore over the pages. Our opinions are our own.

Lacks an English index, otherwise quite good
By John Armstrong
This book has three parts and two appendices: Part One: Basics of Korean (about 25 pages); Part Two: Grammar Points (about 330 pages); Part Three: Frequently Seen Word Parts (4 pages); Appendix 1: How to Sound like a Native (7 pages); and Appendix 2: Useful Korean Language Resources (3 pages).

The core of the book, accounting for 85% of the total pages is Part Two: Grammar Points. It’s basically a Korean pattern dictionary, which includes a large, unnumbered (and uncounted by me) set of entries grouped into 47 sections. The sections are pretty coherent and tend to be functionally oriented, bringing together patterns that can be used to express a particular kind of concept and explaining how they differ or for that matter don’t, i.e. are interchangeable.

The problem with this section for me is that it is very hard to find things in it. If you already know the Korean pattern you can simply look it up in the index, but if you are trying to find the Korean pattern or patterns that you can use to express something you can only characterize in English you will have a hard time, because it’s often not easy to guess from the section names, and there are no English entries in the index (or, alternatively, there is no English index to complement the Korean index).

Apart from this problem, which I think is a major one, there are other things that could be better (for example the Part One: Basics of Korean, is kind of shaky, and the lists of examples are often more repetitive than they need to be; also the Romanization, though intending to follow the South Korean 2000 Revised Romanization standard, is rather inconsistent), but the overall quality of the book, and particularly that of the Grammar Points, is high, and offers information and insights not found in other books.

I would probably give the book five stars if it had an effective English index. As it is I give it four.

Four Stars
By Joe Harris
An excellent resource for intermediate and advanced Korean language students.

Not what it claims to be
By Patrick
This book was extremely disappointing — for several reasons, but mostly because it is not what it claims to be: As other reviewers have noted, this book is something of a “pattern dictionary,” and is in fact NOT a “comprehensive grammar” as it claims to be. It is also not the best written text I have ever attempted to read, and indeed I could only stomach about 60% of the book. That said, in fairness to the author, who undoubtedly knows quite a bit about Korean, I will enumerate the book’s good points first, before exploding with the bad ones.

The book has the following going for it:
(1) It collates structures according to semantics, which can make selecting a given construction for use to convey a particular meaning easier.
(2) It rates constructions according to the degree to which they resemble spoken or written language, and also as to how common they are. This is valuable information for a learner, and is often not addressed in grammars.
(3) The author does address various nuances pertinent to the constructions she delineates, such as contexts in which they cannot be used, &c.
(4) It looks nice. (Seriously, it’s well organized on the page, which is surprisingly satisfying — and I have read too many grammars that are so ugly to the eye that it is actually distracting and confusing.)

That’s not very many good points, to be sure, but they are there. Now for the negatives.

First of all, I have to get my own petty annoyances out of the way:
(1) The author’s attempts at humor – which are far too frequent – are horribly dull and corny, and though it may simply be my personal preference, I cannot but feel that a “comprehensive grammar” should present itself a bit more professionally and abstain from bad jokes every few paragraphs.
(2) If I had a dollar for every time the author uses the word “expression” – in referring to anything from inflectional or derivational morphemes to phrase-level constituents to entire constructions – I would be filthy rich. Seriously, it’s annoying, and confusingly vague.

Another issue that is not so petty, and that other reviewers have noted, is that the Romanization of the Korean Hangeul is inconsistent and contains a fair number of outright mistakes. She is also inconsistent as to whether she uses the term “descriptive verb” or “adjective” to describe a particular lexical category in Korean; I frankly don’t care which she picks, but I wish that she would stick with one.

On a more serious note, this book claims to be (and I quote from the front cover) “a complete overview of Korean grammar for learners at all levels from beginner to advanced.” Not one thing about this claim is true: This book is not comprehensive, it is not a grammar (at least not one worthy of the name), and it is not for all learners. In fact, the author herself, in the appendix for other Korean learning resources at the back of the book, recommends her own text for only intermediate-level learners, and after reading most of it, I am inclined to agree: Beginners should stay away, and advanced students would probably find it dull. (I myself am a beginner and got nothing from this book.) The book she recommends for advanced learners, Martin’s A Reference Grammar of Korean, is pricier, but is, as she acknowledges, written more for linguists and is therefore a more complete and accurate picture of Korean grammar, for those willing to work with a text of greater technicality and girth.

In fact, though it would seem that she has, the impression I get from this book, being a linguist myself, is that Ms. Kingdon has never read a linguistic text in her life: She makes numerous errors in terminology and explanation that anyone with even a basic grasp of linguistics would not make, for instance (just some of the examples that jumped out at me):
(1) Calling postpositions “ending prepositions” (an oxymoron, as is obvious to anyone with a functional knowledge of English morphology).
(2) Have I mentioned the massive overuse of the word “expression”?
(3) Claiming that “the past tense tells us that something is finished” — no, ma’am, it does not. Past tense means occurring before the time of utterance. Depicting an event as finished is aspect, not tense.
(4) Claiming that the vowel represented by 으 (in IPA, /ɯ/, Romanized variously as u or eu) elides from verb stems on affixation (though the term affix has yet to appear in any of my reading — it’s always “expression”) of the past morpheme “because it’s a weak vowel and easily pushed around by stronger vowel sounds.” No, it is not: There is nothing weak about that vowel. It is perfectly stable in, for instance, Korean’s sister, Japanese. It is simply a quirk of Korean that the vowel elides in that position.
(5) Vast overuse of the term “conjugation” that nearly but doesn’t quite rival that of “expression”: Conjugation refers to inflection of verbs. Ms. Kingdon seems to think that any grammatical construction can be crammed under this term. Pages upon pages in this book are occupied by tables entitled “How it’s conjugated” — and the majority of the time, there is no conjugation present.
There are others, believe me, but these are just ones that I can remember off the top of my head and were particularly annoying or salient.

Of course, I do not necessarily expect Ms. Kingdon to be an out and out linguist. Most language teachers are not. Linguistics can indeed become far more technical than most learners care to know, and I do not expect her to address such issues in a reference grammar. In fact, sometimes the technicality of linguistics is an impediment to learners who are not well-versed in it, and I am willing to accept some tradeoff: For instance, the use of the term “future tense” to refer to a particular morpheme in Korean, while – though I am still new to Korean linguistics in particular, so I cannot be too firm on this – I have read that it is more properly an irrealis mood marker. That said, however, I have read several reference grammars for multiple languages in my day, and I can say that the best were always at least informed by basic linguistic knowledge and structured according to the basic outline of metalinguistics (if not written by out and out linguists): phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics (and occasionally pragmatics added in).

The most damning evidence that Ms. Kingdon is rather linguistically inept is her terming this book a “comprehensive grammar,” which I have said before is completely wrong. Firstly, this book is not a grammar: Ms. Kingdon seems to think that “grammar” means listing a bunch of structures used in the language and giving tidbits of information about how to use them. That is a dictionary. Grammar refers to the rules and principles that govern the use of language by native speakers.

Secondly, this book is far from “comprehensive”: It does not address the phonetics or phonology of Korean AT ALL, both of which are integral parts of grammar. It barely touches on morphology, and while the majority of the book is basically syntax, it nevertheless ignores several important syntactic questions. For instance, not once did I ever see this book mention that the basic word order of Korean is SOV. That’s kinda important to know, especially for a beginner. Likewise, in the field of pragmatics, since the book is written to an English audience and supposedly one which includes beginners, I would think that Ms. Kingdon would explain the nature of Korean as a topic-oriented language, as opposed to a subject-oriented language like English. Also kinda important. No such explanation exists in this book as far as I know.

I could go on, but at this point you get the picture. I apologize if this has been rather desultory — I’m a bit miffed at having paid good money on this book, which to me is now mostly worthless. The bottom line is this: If you are serious about studying Korean grammar, and especially if you are a beginning or advanced learner, this book is a waste of your money. Save up and by Martin’s — I haven’t read it yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Couple that with a good dictionary and some patience and you will learn far more than this book will ever teach you.

I would have given this book two stars because it isn't all that bad as long as you don't believe it to be a "comprehensive grammar," but then Amazon showed me that one star means "I hate it," and I hate this book, so yeah.

He Shall Go Out Free: The Lives of Denmark Vesey (American Profiles), by Douglas R. Egerton

On July 2, 1822, Denmark Vesey was hanged in Charleston, S.C., for his role in planning one of the largest slave uprisings in the United States. During his long, extraordinary life Vesey played many roles—Caribbean field hand, cabin boy, chandler's man, house servant, proud freeman, carpenter, husband, father, church leader, abolitionist, revolutionary. Yet until his execution transformed him into a symbol of liberty, Vesey made it his life's work to avoid the attention of white authorities. Because he preferred to dwell in the hidden alleys of Charleston's slave community, Vesey remains as elusive as he is today celebrated, and his legend is often mistaken for fact.

In this biography of the great rebel leader, Douglas R. Egerton employs a variety of historical sources—church records, court documents, travel accounts, and newspapers from America and Saint Domingue—to recreate the lost world of the mysterious Vesey. The revised and updated edition reflects the most recent scholarship on Vesey, and a new afterword by the author explores the current debate about the existence of the 1822 conspiracy. If Vesey's plot was unique in the annals of slave rebellions in North America, it was because he was unique; his goals, as well as the methods he chose to achieve them, were the product of a hard life's experience.

Review
Egerton seeks Vesey in the few records that remain, ranging from newspaper stories to hastily scribbled court transcripts, in uncommon sources from the Carolinas to Haiti. He finds that Vesey was a complicated man whose freed status and eloquence in several languages did not seem to matter, whose frustration with white society, white religion, and white power led him to organize a revolt that consisted of slaves simply walking away from it all. Egerton includes very useful essays on his sources and on Vesey's treatment by historians. (Reference and Research Book News)

Good Start
By Big Sistah Patty
I enjoyed the book and would encourage my folks to read it. It is so hard to get an unbiased history of Denmark Vesey. I am looking for African descened historians to give me an accurate picture.

Considering the author isn't a black historian, he gives a pretty, fair and balanced view of Denmark. I believe the truth is a problem for many people, but I am relatively satisfied this book.

It is beyond belief that some folks would have a problem with enslaved humans rising up and slaughtering thoe with their foot on their necks. These same people don't seem to having a problem with the the whites slaughtering, maiming, and raping, terrorizing and working to death the Africans. Go figure!

I highly recommend.

Fascinating book about a little understood American leader. And it's readable and not too long, so good for a non specialist reader.

Denmark Vesey's fascinating life and horrific death come to life
By Debbie the Librarian
This is a highly readable, well-researched book about the slave rebellion planned by Denmark Vesey. Although this rebellion seems to be relatively unknown to many people interested in the antebellum period of the deep south, it is an important event that had a devastating impact on how slaves were treated in the south. The bibliography and footnotes are quite extensive. No serious scholar or history buffs.

The American Century: Art and Culture 1900-1950, by Barbara Haskell, Whitney Museum of American Art

As the century draws to a close, America has become recognized as one of the most, if not the most, powerful artistic and cultural forces in the world. Why and how this came about, and the astonishing parade of artistic achievement that resulted, is thesubject of this extraordinarily rich volume.

The American Century is the subject of a year-long exhibition at the Whitney Museum ― the most comprehensive display of twentieth-century American art ever assembled, incorporating a wide range of masterpieces from all sections of the country, by both familiar and lesser-known artists. This volume, covering the first half of the century, is a history of American art as well as a permanent record of the Whitney show. Here fine arts achievements are seen as part of the larger culture that helped shape them ― the art forms of film, dance, music, literature, photography, decorative arts, architecture, fashion, and industrial design. All are described and set in the context of political and social currents of the era in Barbara Haskell's rich and informative text. Essays by noted experts in many fields illuminate developments in different areas of artistic endeavor while over 750 full-color and duotone illustrations give visual testimony to America's dominant role in the arts. over 750 full-color and duotone illustrations

Amazon.com Review
To celebrate the coming millennium, the Whitney Museum of American Art is mounting a tremendous nine-month show covering American art from 1900 to 2000. The American Century: Art and Culture, 1900-1950, by curator Barbara Haskell, is the catalog for the first part of the exhibition. Included are images from painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, and design, providing a comprehensive overview of artistic and cultural ideas in the first half of this century. The book is broken into four chapters, beginning with "America in the Age of Confidence: 1900-1919," which includes beautiful John Singer Sargent paintings depicting American aristocratic life and silver objects from Tiffany and Company. Next comes the "Jazz Age in America: 1920-1929," with images documenting the importance of cinema: movie stills and an exquisite portrait of Gloria Swanson in lace. Also included in this period is a focus on industrial architecture as seen through the paintings of Charles Sheeler, Charles Demuth, and Joseph Stella, with their precise but almost abstract renderings of the changing American landscape. Chapter 3, "America in Crisis: 1930-1939," and chapter 4, "War and Its Aftermath: 1940-1949," include many photographs that map the changes in American life during this tumultuous period, from the dustbowl photos of Dorothea Lange to Weegee's pictures of the seamier side of New York City. Within the immensity of this catalog are discussions that relate the works of art to specific cultural phenomena and map the changing trends in the creation of American art. --Jennifer Cohen

From Publishers Weekly
A marvelous visual tour of an America growing in stature and confidence in the art world as it grows politically and economically into a superpower, this exhibition catalogue accompanies the first half of a survey of 20th-century American art and culture at the Whitney Museum. The widely diverse work coveredAranging from dance and commercial art to the creations of an avant-garde in dialogue with European Modernist factionsAis presented in more than 700 well-chosen illustrations. Although the book designers have done a wonderful job grouping the reproductionsAthe pages are often stunningAthe layout of the text is disorienting, as sidebars (50 short essays written by 22 contributors) often interrupt Haskell's main text. Still, particularly in Haskell's coverage of painting, sculpture and photography, the writers have supplied thorough political, historical and cultural contexts. Haskell shows that regionalist painter and printmaker Thomas Hart Benton found fame as a populist and nationalist, and that his reputation suffered when, faced with WWII, the U.S. public turned internationalist. Haskell also traces the impact of economic conditions on photography's subject matter. During the optimistic Jazz Age, when "an equation of America with the machine and technology" held sway, beautiful, idealizing pictures of machinery were in vogue. With the depression came a loss of faith in technology, and documentary photography capturing the plight of the rural poor became popular. While one cannot do justice to The Great Gatsby in a single sentence, as attempted here, this survey, given its vast scope and ambitious framing must be commended for its effective presentation of the big picture. (May) FYI: The exhibition opened this month. The second half, covering 1951-2000, opens in September and that catalogue, by Lisa Phillips, will follow in October.

From Library Journal
With this showAand the sister exhibition opening in September that will cover the second half of the centuryAthe Whitney Museum of American Art aims to revitalize its mission. Will the museum emerge as the staid caretaker of a fixed canon or as a provocateur engaging the current scene and re-evaluating conventional history? This catalog would seem to indicate the former. Curator Haskell is to be commended above all for integrating the social context and cultural developments in a multitude of sidebars by more than 20 experts, and the book manages to bring together a large number of images without devolving into an old-favorites compendium. The problems are less overt. There is the vaguely textbookish toneAthe gray writing lacks the flashes of wit and opinion to be found in Robert Hughes's American Visions (LJ 5/1/97), for instance. An allegiance to the standard history leaves virtually no room to acknowledge art being produced outside New York or outside canonized movements. A silly, doctrinaire refusal to print non-American illustrations will leave neophytes wondering about the already too-scarce references to European and Asian influences in these years before the U.S. hegemony. An acceptable but disappointing entry, this will nonetheless be requested.AEric Bryant, "Library Journal"

Great images less than great text.
By J. Remington
This, the first volume of a two volume work (this is by far the stronger of the two)may not contain the strongest prose in terms of capturing the moment in history when America finally began to assert her own unique voice in the visual arts, but it does boast many glorious images.
Maybe this book is nothing more than a glorified coffee table book, but what a fine, colorful one it is. The book is crammed full of beautiful reproductions of some of the finest work America's shores ever produced: Stella, Johns, Pollock, O'Keefe, Lawrence, Benton, Hopper and Calder all recieve detailed representation.
Being personally obsessed with the art of the Depression, I particularly valued the long, detailed chapter contained here.
Many hours have evaporated as I have lost myself in the many rich reproductions. This book, when enjoyed in union with Robert Hughes' excellent "American Visions" (which supplies the much needed rich prose), serves as a fine celebration of America's visual culture. A fine addition to any library.

Art history as cultural history

The commentary was interesting and valuable. Great for art historians but even better for cultural historians.
