Controlling People: The Paradoxical Nature of Being Human, by Richard S. Marken, Timothy A. Carey

“We need to strive for a world where people control what is important to themselves while minimizing the controlling of others.”

We are all controlling people. In fact our feelings of wellbeing depend on staying in control. Just as when we drive a car, we must stay in control in everyday life in order to keep the things we care about going in the right direction.

Yet this natural controlling behavior is sometimes the very reason we end up losing control. This happens when we try to control other people as well as when we try to control ourselves.

So how do we do better?

Based on Perceptual Control Theory (PCT), this entertaining and enlightening book by psychologists Richard S. Marken and Timothy A. Carey explores the paradox of why we often lose control by trying to be in control and why our controlling nature makes it difficult to stop this self-defeating behavior. They show that understanding PCT opens the window to understanding and learning about ourselves as controlling people and equips us to lead more effective and satisfying lives.

and the pursuit of happiness. You feel better when you’re in control of ...
By Bruce E. Nevin
This compact book introduces Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) to non-technical readers. The title tackles head-on the objections that many of us have to the word control. The phrase controlling people might suggest that this is a manual of techniques for making others do your bidding; or it could be a how-to book for dealing with power-seeking people who want to make us do their bidding. The ambiguity points to a paradox of human experience which the book develops as a central theme. The resolution is presented as the key to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You feel better when you’re in control of things that matter to you, and the same goes for everyone else.

The first two chapters show that we are all controlling people (in both senses), how ubiquitous and pervasive controlling is, and the nature of controlling. Controlling is essential to life. To live is to have purposes and to act so as to realize those purposes. Anything that is alive is a controlling creature. Non-living things may be controlled, or not, but so far as we can tell they cannot control anything. The purposes that they have are due to being controlled for one purpose or another.

The next three chapters introduce Perceptual Control Theory (PCT), the science that accounts for controlling. Chapter three describes the elegant mechanism of circular causation by which we act so as to realize our purposes. In Chapter 4, we learn how the “multitudes” of purposes within us are hierarchically arranged. Higher-level perceptions are controlled by prescribing purposes at the next-lower level of the perceptual hierarchy. Obviously, control is not always successful. Chapter 5 describes the remarkably simple innate process of trial-and-error reorganization, the imperceptible inward process from which emerge learnings of all sorts, including acquired skills, ‘aha’ solutions, and basic cognitive development.

Given this basic understanding of the nuts and bolts of how control works, the paradox of “controlling people” makes more sense. So long as we are alive, we cannot help controlling, that is, having purposes and acting to realize them. And as social beings, our purposes necessarily involve one another. We have norms or standards for how people should act, and we apply these to ourselves as well as to others (even if the application is in the form of rebellion).

Chapter 6 describes three ways in which people control others. One, “do what I want in order to get what you want”, was elaborated by the behaviorist psychologists and other animal trainers. A second, control by deception, is familiar from advertising, public relations, and propaganda. The third is control by brute force, overwhelming the victim’s capacity to control. (Other options are touched on in later chapters.) Controlling another person (or animal) requires you to be on the watch to make sure they comply, and it opens you to counter-control, as in The Good Soldier Švejk or Catch-22.

The chapter closes with a valuable discussion of ‘self control’, where one purpose is controlled by means of another. The analysis of the dieter’s problem of so-called ‘willpower’ as a conflict between two purposes within the same person is by itself worth the price of admission for a lay audience, though more deeply significant payoffs are yet to come in the more general treatment of conflict.

Chapter 7 begins with the most obvious cases of conflict, when people’s purposes cross, with a very useful distinction (or gradation, rather) between arbitrary control and respectful control. Respectful control recognizes that other people have their own goals, and at least tries to accommodate their need to be in control of their lives. This makes possible various cooperative arrangements in which each participant is in some respects controlled by others and in some respects controls others. In these arrangements, the relinquishment of control is voluntary, that is, it is done in a controlled way (as shown by the fact that it can be rescinded). Each participant uses their accommodation to others as means to better control other important purposes. There is a gradation between fully cooperative arrangements and those in which participation is enforced, if only because the arrangement is the only available means of controlling important variables, as in behaviorist conditioning. Only hinted here are the very exciting developments in PCT sociology and anthropology investigating the collective control of the ‘furniture’ of civic life, including social norms.

The concept of loop gain, introduced with the example of the dieter in Chapter 6, is brought out here as a way to keep social interactions from escalating into conflict. The effect of higher gain in controlling a given variable is that you are more attentive to that variable and more quickly and vigorously resist any disturbances that would shift it from the state that you want it to be in. It’s how important it is to you. Most social interactions involve control at fairly low gain. If someone fails to return a smile or a wave, you don’t ordinarily turn back and demand that they do. The example given is asking someone to pass the salt, but they’re engrossed in conversation, so you employ other means to get the salt—you might ask someone else, or go get it yourself. Here, the gain on controlling use of the salt remains relatively high, but the gain on controlling particular means of getting the salt is low, and that is what frees you to look for alternative means. There is a lost opportunity here to bring out the relationship of this to the Method of Levels in the next chapter, but the connection is brought out at the end of the book.

Chapter 7 closes with an entertaining survey of the field of self-improvement. What needs ‘improving’—the source of that dissatisfaction that leads us to buy self-help books, videos, and courses—is internal conflict. The ‘improver’ is the Reorganization system.

The good part about our reorganization capacity is that even the most distressing turmoil can be resolved given the right conditions and sufficient time. It may be something of a drawback to this ability, however, that, because it works so well, almost any technique will seem successful if it’s applied to enough people.

The secret sauce behind every success for a given therapeutic technique or therapist is the Method of Levels (MoL). Chapter 8 begins with the striking proposal that every time we make a choice, we experience a conflict and then resolve it. We routinely resolve mundane conflicts all the time, with others as well as within ourselves, without ever becoming particularly aware of them as conflicts. The means that I use to control a given purpose could be either A or B. But there are reasons for using A, and different reasons for using B—that is, A and B also serve other, additional purposes, and as long as those motivations are out of awareness the choice is difficult to make. Choosing one, the motivation for the other choice is dissatisfied. The higher the gain at the level of A and B, the greater the distress. By bringing awareness above that level to the motivation for A and to the motivation for B until both are held in view, the problem resolves itself. Just as, at the dinner table, it’s really not so important to make Alice listen to me, there are other ways to get the salt, in the same way lowering the gain at the level of an internal conflict and turning attention to the motives that are driving each side of the conflict opens the way to a spontaneous resolution.

Consciousness, or awareness, is the Mysterious Moe of PCT. No one knows quite what it is, only that with it ‘we’ seem to move around from one perception to another. Chapter 7 closes with a brief discussion of the role of awareness in MoL, and some cogent suggestions for applying MoL to ourselves. It turns out that talking to yourself might not be so crazy after all. Rightly understood, it might be just the thing for sanity, peace of mind, and—dare we say it?—self-improvement.

Chapter 10 starts off with a definition of freedom as being in control, and then surveys the three enemies of freedom: overwhelming disturbance, ignorance, and conflict. Control by definition acts to maintain a perceptual variable in a preferred state in spite of unpredictable disturbances in the environment that affect that variable. As we drive we keep the car more or less centered in our lane of the road, despite curves, bumps, and wind. Some disturbances are just too strong for our means of control. During a hurricane, we should park the car and seek shelter.

Ignorance is remedied by education and practice. Knowing how to play baseball won’t help you understand a cricket match, and vice versa. There’s a deft political touch here, affirming that investment in education is investment in freedom, and identifying poverty as overwhelming disturbance.

Conflict, also, is re-examined in terms of politics.

So once again we confront a paradox of controlling people—in order to be in control (free) people have to allow themselves to be controlled (to play by the rules of society). This is actually the paradox that all societies have to confront. How to organize themselves so that each individual is best able to control their own life without giving up too much control to the powers that be…. [those] who enforce the rules that are implemented to reduce interpersonal conflict.

Although we don’t generally think of it that way, control actually restricts one’s freedom. We don’t think of it that way because, when we’re controlling successfully, our experience is just as we wish it to be. If you did want a different experience at the same time, you could not control either experience with complete satisfaction, due to conflict. The bumper sticker might say “I’d rather be sailing”, but when you’re driving the car you can’t be sailing a boat. You have to restrict yourself to being a part of the machinery of the car, its control system. As my grandfather used to say, the part of a car that causes the most accidents is the nut behind the wheel. If you were to daydream too much about sailing, it might reduce your competence as a driver. But why drive? Why sail? Those questions lift you above the conflict, and in general

… having the flexibility to shift our consciousness to the higher, more valued, and perhaps more abstract goals will help to expand our freedom in any given situation. The more specific and particular your goals are in any given situation the greater the likelihood that your freedom will be restricted.

By applying the MoL process, we can identify what matters most to us, and then

we will have a much better sense of the battles that are worth fighting for. We will know with clarity and determination what is important to us, and we will also be more certain of the things that can fall by the wayside.

The final chapter suggests how an understanding of ourselves as controlling people can help us “understand that altruism is, ultimately, a selfish act….Paradoxically by giving others the freedom to have the control they want, we will actually be giving ourselves more freedom as well.” The suggestion is that this is how to establish more humane social and economic arrangements.

Control is the way it is. Life is control. We need to understand it, and we need to learn to live with it. We need to strive for a world where people prioritize finding ways to control what is important to themselves in a way that minimizes the extent to which they interfere with the controlling of others.

That, and all that it implies, would really be a world worth the trouble.

Why would anyone wish it otherwise? Why indeed. But the book may well be forgiven for not concerning itself with the pathologies which make such a ruckus in the world. It is engaging, accessible, and serves its purposes well.

Because PCT is a wonderful theory that helps you understand the how and why ...
By Frederick W. Nickols
If you’re interested in knowing more about Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) then this book is for you. If you’re not interested in PCT you should be. Why? Because PCT is a wonderful theory that helps you understand the how and why of the ways in which people control various aspects of the world in which they live, including dogs, cats, kids, coffee cups, other people, their wives, their husbands, themselves, cars, their boss, diets, exercise, the size of their paycheck and just about anything imaginable that someone, somewhere, at some time wants to be a certain way. It is about control; it is about people controlling and it is about controlling people.

Rick Marken and Tim Carey do a marvelous job of laying out the essence of control as it manifests itself in relation to human behavior. Chief among the surprises awaiting you (if you’re new to PCT) is that we don’t control any of those things mentioned above; instead, we control our perceptions of those things. Thus the mantra of PCT: Behavior is the control of perception.

In 10 reasonably short, easy-to-read, easily understood and well-written chapters, the authors lay it all out, beginning with the ambiguous pair of words in the title – “Controlling People” – and making their way through control, Perceptual Control Theory, including a hierarchy of control and the way it works to repair itself known as “reorganization” on to matters related to people trying to control other people (which necessarily touches on conflict and a way of resolving it known as “The Method of Levels”) and ending up with a nice summary of what it’s all about.

A few of the points I value most about the book are listed below:

• The clear, simple, straightforward explanation of control and Perceptual Control Theory (PCT).
• The notion of human beings as a “multitude” of control systems, not just a single system.
• The explanation of reorganization (and I’ll leave that to you to read).
• The nature of conflict and “going up a level” as a means of resolving it.
• The critique of “carrot-and-stick” practices in light of control.
• The discussion of “freedom” in light of humans as controlling beings.

I’ve been a fan of PCT for many years now and a fan of its late creator, William T. Powers. I think Bill would have been delighted with this book because I think he would think as I do; namely, that “Controlling People” will do much to bring PCT into the mainstream of meaningful views of human behavior and lead more people to see other people and themselves for what they are: “Living Control Systems.”

Buy it. Read it. Learn from it. Enjoy it.

Entertaining and educational. A must-read for anyone interested in human behavior.
By Barbara K. Powers
This book is an interesting and concise explanation of Perceptual Control Theory, especially for those who are just starting out on the road to understanding this complex examination of behavior. It's an entertaining overview, but also a serious introduction to the basic premise and terminology. The Method of Levels, developed using PCT, is an important application of this theory, and offers an important and refreshing new perspective on addressing conflicts between and within people.

Handbook of Dynamic Psychotherapy for Higher Level Personality Pathology, by Eve Caligor, Otto F. Kernberg, John F. Clarkin

This book provides an approach to understanding and treating higher level personality pathology. It describes a specific form of treatment called "dynamic psychotherapy for higher level personality pathology" (DPHP), which was designed specifically to treat the rigidity that characterizes that condition. Handbook of Dynamic Psychotherapy for Higher Level Personality Pathology provides a hands-on approach to a treatment method that offers a broad range of patients the opportunity to modify maladaptive personality functioning in ways that can permanently enhance their quality of life.

The authors provide a clear, specific, and comprehensive description of how to practice DPHP from beginning to end, presented in jargon-free exposition using extensive clinical illustrations. Throughout, the book emphasizes fundamental clinical principles that enable the clinician to think through clinical decisions moment-to-moment and also to develop an overall sense of the trajectory and goals of treatment. Taking a diagnosis-driven approach, the book describes goals, strategies, tactics, and techniques, demonstrating the flexibility of the approach across a relatively long course of treatment. Finally, the authors provide a sophisticated discussion of integrating dynamic psychotherapy with medication management and other forms of treatment.

    Review
"As an extension of TFP to the therapy of higher level personality pathology, this text fills an important theoretical and clinical gap in the psychoanalytic literature. To my knowledge, it is the first psychoanalytic work to address work with this population. It expands psychoanalytic expertise into areas covered previously by cognitively oriented authors."-" PsycCRITIQUES," "October14, 2007"

"This is a very good book and methodology for the treatment of patients who are functional in most areas of their life but continue to have problems secondary to their personality issues. The breakdown of the guidelines from overall goals to moment to moment interactions in session is well done. The clinical examples are extremely useful in illustrating treatment points."- "Doody's Book Review Service," "June 15, 2007"

"Caligor, Kernberg, and Clarkin have equalled, and perhaps surpassed, the excellence of their group's earlier work on the treatment of borderline personality. Here they apply contemporary object relations theory to a new population through "Dynamic Psychotherapy for Higher Level Personality Pathology." This volume explains the theory, describes the patients, and discusses everything that a clinician might desire--always with clinical examples, links to underlying theory, and a generous sprinkling of pearls of wisdom that make clear that the authors have been there themselves. Anyone who treats these patients should read it carefully and refer to it frequently, and will learn and enjoy while doing so."-- "Robert Michels, M.D., Walsh McDermott University Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, Cornell University; Supervising and Training Analyst, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, New York, New York"

" "Handbook of Dynamic Psychotherapy for Higher Level Pathology", by Caligor, Kernberg, and Clarkin, is a wonderful new contribution from the Kernberg group. It is an elegant, clear, coherent presentation of an object-relations view of higher-level psychopathology, linked to a step-by-step psychotherapeutic strategy to guide clinicians in their work with these complicated patients."-- "John M. Oldham, M.D., Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff, The Menninger Clinic, and Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas"

"Dr. Caligor and her colleagues offer a most comprehensive and lucid exposition of the theoretical base, the strategies, the techniques, and the operative tactics of dynamic psychotherapy for higher level (neurotic) personality pathology (DPHP). A most fitting companion to the group's earlier delineation of transference focused psychotherapy (TFP), geared to the therapy of more severe, borderline pathology-both therapies based on the specific object-relational development of psychoanalytic theory pioneered by Otto Kernberg. The volume is addressed remarkably successfully to both the psychotherapy neophyte and the seasoned psychodynamic clinician."-- "Robert S. Wallerstein, M.D., Emeritus Professor and Former Chair, Department of Psychiatry, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, San Francisco, California."

Perfect book for students and for experts
    By Elizabeth Auchincloss
As an educator who has spent 30 years working with trainees learning to do psychotherapy, and learning to apply complex models of the mind to clinical work of all kinds, I found this book to be a perfect guide. Dr. Caligor has done an amazing job of explaining how therapy works based on our understanding of how the mind works; she has also explained how students can operationalize this knowledge in the form of psychotherapy technique. The book is equally useful for students, and for experts, alike. Bravo!!!

    Very interesting.

This is a well written, insightful book. Humanistic and not judgmental about mental illness. Very educational. I enjoyed this book. Like a textbook to read but worth it. I highlighted many areas. An interesting way to break down hard to comprehend personalities.

Excellent guide to helping with rigid personality traits
    By Ben
As a psychiatrist who practices medication management, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, I think this book is a superb introduction to an object relations approach for psychotherapy. Although it is especially helpful for focusing on rigid personality traits, its clear descriptions of techniques and highly detailed clinical illustrations serve as a excellent introduction to psychotherapy in general. Also, the systematic approach to evaluating patients and discussing diagnosis and treatment options is extremely helpful, as is the adaptability of this treatment for use with medication and other psychotherapies. Highly recommended!

At 55 and an avid reader, one of the best and most fun books I have read in the last year.
    By Kindle Customer
Adults don't be put off by the fact that the heros in this book are children... Or are they? I read some of Harry Potter books, which is definitely directed more to the young (found it to young for me ) this book, with its college-level vocabulary , its characters and its settings in various points in history speaks to the adult reader, although can be enjoyed by the young. Wonderfully written and excellent character development. Adults can easily identify and see the personalities of adult friends in Rigg's young heros and yet something would have been lost had these characters been portrayed as adults and not children (David vs Goliath ). It moves quickly along and extremely difficult to put down. Although can be read without reading the first book, strongly suggest you do read the first; although I liked this book a bit better than the first.

    Definitely worth the wait!
    By Catrina T.
After a long wait, it’s finally here. Hollow City, the second book in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series. And it is so worth it and then some.

I received my copy on the afternoon of the 11th and finished the whole thing by midnight of the 13th. There never was a dull moment from the first page to the cliffhanger in the end. Yes, like with a LOT of book nowadays, this is a part of a trilogy or series. It kept me on the edge of my seat and never let go.

We pick up where the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children left off. The peculiar kids and Jacob (who was revealed to be also peculiar) were left to their own devices after their home was destroyed. They did manage to save Miss Peregine, in bird form, from the wights but she could not turn back into a human. They make their way to London, the peculiar capital of the world, to seek help for their injured mistress.

The author definitely improved the children’s voices in this new book. I enjoyed Olive, Millard, and Bronwyn. Jacob also changed. No longer was he the jaded rich kid from book one. He grew up; he took on new responsibilities as well as an understanding about his peculiarity. I like this new Jacob. It reminds me of how Harry Potter evolved from a clueless Muggle-raised boy to a very capable wizard. His relationship with Emma didn’t irk me as much as it did before; I actually thought it was cute and it gave the story the push forward that it needed in the end.

The main characters are children but this is definitely not a story for children. It’s dark and scary at times. There are parallels to the horrors of World War II. And just like with The Hunger Games, children are at the center of the tragedy. There were happy moments but they are few and far between. They are just… moments. The feeling of danger and fear and uncertainty rule throughout the book and that made it so very engaging. “What happens to them next? What’s around the corner? How will they go on?” The final chapters completely blindsided me. Imagine me fighting to keep my eyes open at 12mn and then suddenly shooting straight up as I turned to the last pages. Like I said my review of the first book, “The author CANNOT leave it at that!”

As usual, the photographs are stunning. The story was perfectly crafted around them and each photo fit a character and/or a scenario perfectly. Hats off to Mr. Riggs for doing such a great job of building a whole world for us based on found pictures. I can see how one can be inspired by such beautiful pieces.

Do yourself a favor and please buy a physical copy of this book (and of the first one). Even if you are an ebooker, it is so worth it to add these bound pieces of art to your shelf. I read the first one on my B&N nook but I eventually managed to get hard copies. And I got so excited when they came in the mail and even though I already read it, I still browse the pages, admiring the stunning photographs.

    An ok but disappointing sequel
    By A. Allen
Wasn't blown away... thought it was a disappointing sequel, but still good.

    What I didn't like:
I was disappointed in the pace and the plot.. it felt artificially manufactured to create tension, as opposed to those stories where the tension feels real... And I think that might have been in part because of how I felt about the pictures this round... it felt that at many points, the author was creating words to fit a picture he wanted to add--when it didn't really add to the plot or the characters or the pacing or really anything.

I was also annoyed by the romantic aspect, but disregard that if you like that kind of thing ;) To me, it's always annoying when it's over-the-top cheesy, and I had a hard time finding it realistic in the atmosphere -- ya know, life or death.

I thought that the characters spent WAY too much time NOT using the peculiarities they've spent a LONG time having when they were confronted with danger... I know, in some cases it made sense, but in others it was like this weird inexplicable delay. And I felt that the development of Jacob's peculiarity, while the rest of us could see it coming 100 miles away, took WAY too long to FINALLY show its face.

And I'll say, I just did not like the near-ending. But what and why are spoilers :)

    What I did like:
It's still just an interesting concept and I like the idea of having a story with realistic (ish) pictures accompanying it. I really liked some of the development of characters (Bronwyn and Olive in particular), and I liked the addition of some of the new characters (Peter-and-Joel and Joel-and-Peter). I also thought that Riggs had good ideas and some of his plot development was really interesting. Although I felt the pace was off and forced at times, there were other times when it flowed quite nicely -- particularly when they meet.... Althea (I'll say no more).

If you just loved the first, it's likely worth it to read the 2nd. If you can ignore some of the deficiencies, my guess is you'll probably even really enjoy the second! (a lot of people sure have :)) Otherwise, the above notes may give you just the amount of "managed expectations" needed to enjoy the book anyway :)
