The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (Oxford Handbooks)From Oxford University Press

Refugee and Forced Migration Studies has grown from being a concern of a relatively small number of scholars and policy researchers in the 1980s to a global field of interest with thousands of students worldwide studying displacement either from traditional disciplinary perspectives or as a core component of newer programmes across the Humanities and Social and Political Sciences. Today the field encompasses both rigorous academic research which may or may not ultimately inform policy and practice, as well as action-research focused on advocating in favour of refugees' needs and rights.

This authoritative Handbook critically evaluates the birth and development of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, and analyses the key contemporary and future challenges faced by academics and practitioners working with and for forcibly displaced populations around the world. The 52 state-of-the-art chapters, written by leading academics, practitioners, and policymakers working in universities, research centres, think tanks, NGOs and international organizations, provide a comprehensive and cutting-edge overview of the key intellectual, political, social and institutional challenges arising from mass displacement in the world today. The chapters vividly illustrate the vibrant and engaging debates that characterize this rapidly expanding field of research and practice.

Review
"an excellent initiative, which not only provides a summary of past and present of this stream of research but also sheds light on the emerging debates that will dominate the field in the upcoming years . . . This volume fills a gap in the market, as it is a unique effort to offer an
evaluation of past, present and future of the refugee and forced migration studies from such broad perspectives. It is an invaluable source for those who are new to refugee and forced migration studies, and it is a useful source for those already in the field who want to refresh their memories and
revisit the current debates in a neatly prepared handbook."

--Bahar Baser, Review of Social Studies

"a wide-ranging and forward-thinking contribution that is the first of its kind in this field, The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies has certainly achieved its goal of providing an accessible, yet academically rigorous resource for practitioners, policy makers, academics,
and students working on refugee and forced migration issues."

Intriguing insights
By bon francais
Richelieu's "Testament Politique" is a fascinating insight into the thoughts and political ideals of this great statesman. The chapters and extracts in this edition are particularly interesting for his views on the conduct of the King, the requirements of royal councillors and the arrangements of the royal household. It should be borne in mind that Richelieu wrote the book over the course of years, and that it does not always reflect reality (for example, his famous three-point promise to the King was not as neat, or as neatly achieved, as was long assumed). However it is still an invaluable insight into the Cardinal's political thinking. It also contains some rather amusing and surely unintended revelations - in the chapter where Richelieu pleads for the King to reform his (very sloppy) household, one can almost feel the frustration seeping off the page - Richelieu was fighting a losing battle against Louis's lifelong personal habits here, and must have known it. The writing is pithy (reflecting, as the Cardinal says himself, his own style and the preferences of his intended audience - ie. the King) and the translation is clear and concise. This is an essential read for anyone studying the reign of Louis XIII.

Good insight into the world of Louis XIV
By A Customer
Cardinal Richelieu's instructions for a king were very informative while learning about the era of Louis XIV. The first half of the book is interesting and at times humerous to read what he believed about people. However the second half slows down considerably and brings down the book. It was assigned to me or I would have probbably never read it, not having much interest in France in general but it wasn't a bad read.

A valuable translation for students of Richelieu's Era
By Nick
This translation of the Testament of Cardinal Richelieu is important to Anglophone students of both the Cardinal and his era. While the Testament is probably not filled with useful advice for the practice of 21st Century statecraft, it provides a valuable insight into the struggles undertaken to reform and recast a still Medieval France into a modern European state that was united politically under a single Royal government that was itself, in the person of the King, the heart of the nation-state.

This was the cause that lay at the heart of Richelieu's long, ruthless, and largely successful career as the powerful Minister to Louis XIII. The Testament is an insight into the mind, the successes and frustrations of the Cardinal's lifetime of efforts.

My Son Divine, by Frances Milstead, Steve Yeager, Kevin Heffernan

This remarkable biography-written by Divine's mother Frances Millstead, with Kevin Heffernan and Steve Yeager, the award-winning filmmakers whose documentary film Divine Trash won the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival-reveals a never-before-seen side of the internationally renowned actor and drag performer. As she tells of his childhood, their long estrangement, and a heart-warming reconciliation before his death, Frances Millstead brings a mother's love and insight to the story of Glenn Harris Millstead, who would shock his way to international stardom as Divine, the star of John Waters cult films Female Trouble, Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and his breakthrough hit, Hairspray. Following him as he grows from angelic choirboy to troubled teen to flamboyant adult, this account reconciles for the first time the two sides of Divine-outrageous performer and loving son-as the legendary star's humanity is lovingly and movingly revealed through words and heretofore unpublished photos.

An Excerpt

Thursday, October 18, 1945, was a beautiful fall day. The doctor had told me I would give birth around the 19th. I decided to go to my mother-in-law's house so I wouldn't be alone if I went into labor. Harris dropped me off there on his way to work. Mom and I prepared dinner, and we talked and laughed about my having the baby. I was

Amazon.com Review
No mother wants to watch her son eat dog poop, as Frances Milstead, mother of the gifted actor and outrageous drag persona Divine (1945-1988) would agree. Divine asked her not to see the John Waters film Pink Flamingos, in which the unforgettable poop-noshing scene occurs, and she has abided by his wishes. To her credit, though, she proudly describes the scene and its aftermath, in which Divine's friends overheard him calling an emergency room to ask what diseases his 12-year-old son might have picked up from eating a dog turd ("Yes, well, he's a little retarded."). Clearly Milstead is no ordinary mother. Page after page she provides a remarkably unembarrassed view of her son's adventures on and off screen. With amusing childhood details for true devotees of Divine, plenty of new photos, and judicious quoting from other sources, such as John Waters and his friend and producer Pat Moran, My Son Divine serves as a corrective to Bernard Jay's harshly drawn Not Simply Divine, and offers a warm, entertaining version of the drag star's life. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
This loving, photo-filled tribute to the 350-pound female impersonator/disco chanteuse/ character actor Divine (born Harris Glenn Milstead) offers cult movie fans an intimate biography of the star of Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Lust in the Dust and other films, and stands as an excellent companion to John Waters's Shock Value. Thanks to an ideal matching of coauthors, there is a satisfying balance between "Glenny at home" anecdotes from Divine's mother and detailed coverage of his career from coauthors Heffernan and Yeager (writer and director, respectively, of Divine Trash, the award-winning documentary about the early films of Waters and Divine). Born to doting parents, Glenn was a complicated child: he struggled with his weight, and with his social life; he could be moody and occasionally demanding. His habit of charging purchases to his parents' credit cards eventually led to a nine-year estrangement. During that time, Waters rechristened Glenn "Divine" and created a midnight matinee star. "I wanted him to be the Godzilla of drag queens," said Waters, who, along with costars and friends, is extensively interviewed throughout. Later, happily reunited with his family, Divine found mainstream success with 1988's Hairspray; a few weeks later, at 42, he died of cardiac arrest. Many quoted within this volume decry the negativity of Not Simply Divine, the lively 1993 memoir by Divine's manager Bernard Jay. But the portraits resemble one another, in that each is a warts-and-all biography of an artist who was larger than life in both talent and temperament. Color and b&w photos. (Nov.)Forecast: With hundreds of never-before-published photos and the ace credentials of the authors, fans of the flamboyant star will find this package hard to resist.

From Booklist
With the help of the creators of Divine Trash and In Bad Taste, documentaries about John Waters and Divine, the latter's mother, Frances Milstead, limns the life of her son, the superstar of Waters' satirical films Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and Hair Spray. Divine and his mother were estranged for 20 years. They reconciled shortly before his death, but she had viewed much of his film career from afar. So she details his early years, verifying that the ludicrous Female Trouble (1974) contained scenes that "were like crazy, mixed-up versions of things that . . . really happened," and disclosing that, when he was a toddler, Divine's "favorite song was 'The Teensy Weensy Spider.'" She is candid about the torment he suffered from schoolyard bullies who beat and taunted him. This loving memoir, replete with filmography and discography, is must reading for independent and cult film devotees. Mike Tribby

The Human Behind The Glamour
By S. A DUNN
When you think of glamour you automaticly think of the most beautiful "woman" in the world: the 300+ pound monstrosity, Divine! Yet there was a side to HIr that few saw or understood. This book is written by HIr mother.

Harris Glenn Milstead was the shy overweight femboy who was constantly teased as a child.

Fate brought him into the universe of the budding gay director, John Waters. It took John's warped psyche and Glenn's perfectionism to create the glorious persona, Divine. The result shocked and overjoyed millions and millions of moviegoers and students of the bizarre. Yet in private, Glenn was still the shy femboy who was extremely personal and generous. His only flaws were his love for food and marijuana.

After being enstranged from his parents for years, they finally reconciled and shared out remaining years close and personal. Glenn's star was at last rising and he was being noticed as a great and talented character actor in his own right, apart from the grossout persona, Divine. Yet, as he was preparing for a permanent role in the series 'Married with Children, fate took him from us. Tipping over 400 pounds, he had an All-American heart attack in his sleep.

Few actors can match Glenn's exuberance and hunger for life and humorous good times. He had more talent in his little finger than most actors have in their entire lifetimes. It is sad that he was taken from us right when he was on top of his game. Yet, thank God, we still have the movie records of him and his joys and talents to gross us out and make us feel good.

Get to understand Glenn in ways deeper than him wearing outrageous drag and eating dog spoor for the camera. Read this book and open your mind to the other who made us love him so much through talent, hard work and his outageous antics on film!

New information and pictures abound!
By EmBeEm
I bought this for my girlfriend; seeing as how she is a huge John Waters/Divine fan. I too enjoy reading about Divine, so I naturally read it before gifting it to her. It is chock full of pictures you will have seen no where else, as Divine's mother wrote it. Some say this is his mother's way of cashing in on her sons fame, and I totally disagree. This book is nothing but full of support for her son and gives an unseen look into a younger Divine. If you have seen and enjoyed Pink Flamingos, you are going to love this.

WHAT MAKES A STAR?
By TJAMES03
WHAT TRULY MAKES A PERFORMER A STAR? IS IT LEGIONS OF FANS? MILLIONS IN THE BANK? EMMYS AND OSCARS ON DISPLAY IN THEIR MANSIONS? NO. IN MY OPINION, WHAT TRULY MAKES A PERFORMER A STAR IS A PERSON WITH THE ABILITIES TO INDELIBLY IMPRINT THEMSELVES/THEIR WORK INTO THE MINDS' OF THEIR AUDIENCE - AND THAT IT WHAT DIVINE DID BEST.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK WRITTEN BY HIS MOTHER, ETC., THAT GIVES YOU THE TRUE STORY OF ONE OF HOLLYWOOD'S MOST INFAMOUS OF STARS. FRANCES MILSTEAD DOESN'T SUGARCOAT ANYTHING HERE. SHE PUTS THE GOOD TIMES, AND THE BAD TIMES (AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN), HERE IN PRINT FOR ALL TO SEE. THERE REALLY IS NO NEED FOR ANY OTHER DIVINE BIOGRAPHY TO BE WRITTEN IN THE FUTURE, FOR EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DIVINE (BUT WERE ALWAYS AFRAID TO ASK), IS RIGHT HERE IN THIS BOOKS' PAGES. AND, AS AN ADDED TREAT, THERE ARE MANY, MANY RARE PICTURES OF DIVINE (IN FULL GLOSSY COLOR) IN ALL OF HIS WONDERFUL GLORY HERE TO BE SEEN. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY DIVINE FAN.

WE LOVE YOU DIVINE!!!

About the Author
Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Doesn't come with online access code
By JL
I bought this book thinking it would come with the required online access code since I thought all new textbooks come with one, but when I opened it turns out it doesn't! So now I have to spend $60 more for the online access code. So just beware when you're buying it.

Great bio textbook
By Danielle
As you might guess, I bought this for a college biology course. I think it is one of the better science textbooks I have come across so far; everything is explained in easy to understand language, there are tons of illustrations and diagrams, and the text even repeats some of the more complex information more than once in a chapter (in case you didn't understand it the first time). It is well organized. Rarely do I read the supplemental "fun fact" type stories in textbooks but the ones in here are very interesting and actually add to the rest of the material.

Kindle version available on PC
By Steven
Using a kindle for textbooks may seem like a weird choice, but I happened to get a great amount of use out of it. The kindle reader program is available on your home computer, so you're not stuck reading it on a tiny screen or anything. The ability to search the document for keywords, or quickly swap between chapters made my time using it a lot easier.

As for disadvantages, the price is one. Paying $70+ on a digital file seems a little high, even if it is cheaper than most other versions of the book. Secondly, the kindle app is a little touchy when it comes to swapping pages. Often trying to read the text at the bottom of the page resulted in swapping to the next one on accident.

The Universal Modeling Language (UML) is a flexible and comprehensive way to design and diagram any software development project. Building Web Applications with UML covers the Web Application Extension (WAE) for UML and includes enough background information about Web applications to ease traditional software analysts and designers into the world of the Web.

Author Jim Conallen divides the text into two logical parts: the first is dedicated to explaining the various Web application architectures out there, the second to the process of modeling such systems with UML. The first chapter concisely explains the basics of the standard elements of the Web such as HTML, HTTP, forms, frames, and session management. Subsequent chapters provide an excellent overview to server-side and client-side functionality, delving into key technologies such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Java applets, and XML.

The remainder of the book is devoted to defining the requirements, architecture, and design elements of Web applications using UML. The reader will learn about Use Cases, apply analysis, and represent Web applications with the distinctive graphical elements of UML. A sample ASP application is used to illustrate the concepts. This material may be a level of abstraction above the working coder but is excellent for project managers and system architects. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Browser/Server interactions, Web page design elements, session management, dynamic client and server languages, Web security, model design, use cases, requirement specifications, analysis, sequence diagrams, and class diagrams.

From the Inside Flap

Late in 1996, I downloaded the preview edition of Microsoft's Active Server Pages. It was my first taste of what could be done on the Web. Even then I could see the potential for sophisticated Web applications. I began to investigate alternative architectures: CGI (Common Gateway Interface) and Allaire's Cold Fusion. Even before then, I had started tinkering with the Java beta and later bought Symantec's CafE to experiment with this new language.

At that time, I was an independent consultant working for AT&T in New Jersey. The project had nothing to do with the Web, so my only opportunity to experiment with this technology was during the evenings and whatever spare time I could find. In the end, it was all worth it. I learned a lot and was prepared for the coming onslaught and frenzy of Web application development.

My first opportunity to build a real Web application came at the request of a friend whose father owned a live cut rose wholesale and retail company, Hortico Nurseries Inc. Hortico was interested opening up a retail sales front on the newly emerging Internet. Together with a mutual friend, Jeff Wilkinson, we built our first production e-commerce site. The site was simple. It allowed customers to browse and to search a database of more than 1,400 varieties of roses and even to place orders. At first, the site didn't generate as many orders as we had hoped, but it did expose Hortico to a new market and certainly helped it's sales grow in other ways. To the best of our knowledge, Hortico was the first Web site to make a comprehensive catalog of rose varieties and pictures available to the Internet community. Jeff has pretty much taken over the management of the site, and I help when I can. He has gone on to win awards for Web site design for some of his other projects, and I moved on to other contracts.

My first professional contract dealing with Web applications was with a small start-up company in the healthcare business. This experience got me even more involved with the subtleties of building Active Server pages (ASP) applications, especially with the issues of managing server-side resources and transaction management in a Web application environment. I learned a lot about the use of client-side scripting, applets, and ActiveX controls. I also learned a valuable lesson about testing applications: Client machines with different operating systems can behave differently with the exact same HTML, Java, and browser code. All of these experiences have driven me even more to a belief that Web applications need to be modeled and built just like any other complex software system. In the years that followed, I continued to experiment with the latest Web technologies and consulted with other companies with Web-related issues.

All throughout my Web application experiences, I tried to practice my object-oriented skills in the area of Web application development. I had little problem applying use case analysis, and it wasn't until I started creating analysis and design models that I realized that things were going to get difficult. When creating a Web application, my conceptual focus was always on the Web page. My idea of a model kept revolving around the concept of a site map. I knew that the navigation paths throughout the system were incredibly important to the understanding of the application and that any model of the system would have to include them.

My earliest attempts at modeling Web applications started with Rumbaugh's OMT (Object Modeling Technique); later, when UML version 0.8 was publicly released, I began to apply it. I knew that for any modeling technique to be useful, it needed to both capture the relevant semantics of Web-specific elements, such as Web pages and hyperlinks and their relations to the back-end elements of the systemo middle tier objects and databases. At the time, I found both OMT and UML inadequate to express the things I thought were important in a Web application.

Being a somewhat successful object practitioner and engineer, I jumped to the conclusion that a whole new development methodology and notation were needed. After all, if the existing methods and notation didn't have what I needed, the obvious solution was to invent new ones. This, of course, is a trap that many of us in the software industry fall into. In my free time, I started to draft new graphical and semantic ways to represent Web application architectures. Proud of my work, I began showing it to two of my colleagues: Joe Befumo and Gerald Ruldolph, both experienced object practitioners. Their immediate reaction was: Why? I tried to explain the issues involved with Web application development and the need for visually expressing their designs. Yet everyone I spoke with continued to think that developing a new method and notation was a little overkill.

I started to rethink what I was doing. I wasn't so stuck up to think that I was still right and everyone else wrong. I had more homework to do. I reexamined my original needs: to express Web application designs at the appropriate level of abstraction and detail, and most important, as a part of the rest of the system's design. Since UML was taking the industry by storm, I realized that anything I did would have to work with UML.

So I went back to the UML. By now, it was in version 0.91, and a new concept was included: stereotypes. At first, I was clueless to what a stereotype was. The UML specification is not the easiest reading, after all. It was long and difficult, but I knew that any success in the area of modeling Web applications had to come from this direction. Eventually, I started to understand what was meant by stereotyping and the other extension mechanisms: tagged values and constraints. I was finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

I now had a mechanism with which I could introduce new semantics into the UML grammar without disturbing the existing semantics. I always knew that the key was to provide a consistent and coherent way to model Web-specific elements at the right level of abstraction with the models of the rest of the system. The UML extension mechanism provided me with the framework to do so.

The next step was to start defining the extension by creating stereotypes, tagged values, and constraints. For me, the ability to use custom icons in diagrams with stereotyped elements went a long way to ease my concern for intuitive diagrams; also, Rational Rose, my visual modeling tool of choice,1 had just introduced a way to use one's own stereotypes in Rose models. I quickly created a set of icons for Web page abstractions. I tried to make them consistent, mostly rectangular with the stereotype indication in the upper-left corner. I used filled-in dog ears to represent pages and unfilled dog ears2 to denote components. Icons without any dog ears typically represented contained classes, which cannot be requested directly by a Web browser. The icon for Web page components is pretty much a copy of the icon used by the three amigosoGrady Booch, James Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobsonoin their book, The Unified Modeling Language User Guide (Addison Wesley Longman, 1999).

Looking back, I remember spending less than a day to draw up the icons. I didn't spend much time on it then, since I always believed that eventually someone with a little more experience would design some meaningful ones. In the almost two years since then, they have remained essentially the same. I am surprised that I have received absolutely no comments on the style of the icons from the hundred or more people who have been using them. I think that for this version of the extension, the style of icons is gonna stick.

As the extension evolved and a lot of the details and inconsistencies were getting corrected, I always kept an eye out for code-generation possibilities. In my mind, the modeling technique could be validated if it were possible, in theory only, to unambiguously generate and reverse engineer code. Since most of my experience was with Microsoft Active Server Pages, I began creating Rational Rose scripts to forward engineer ASP code. I've tailored the scripts to create Java Server Pages code also; from a code structure point of view the two are very similar.

From that point, things proceeded at a tremendous rate. I published a white paper on the Internet and presented the topic at the 1998 Rational User's Conference in Orlando, Florida. Grady Booch took an interest in the work and encouraged me. Addison Wesley Longman asked whether I was interested in expanding the topic into a book. If I had only known how difficult was going to be to write, I'm not sure that I would have agreed. I followed the original white paper with a stream of other articles for both online and print publications and started to get a regular stream of e-mail comments on the extension.

By the time this book hits the streets, I will have introduced the topic at five professional conferences and written at least a dozen articles and white papers on the topic. Ideally, this book will continue to propel the recognition that Web application development is a serious topic and one from which we can learn and adopt the successful practices of the past.

August 19991. All of the sample models used in this effort were developed with Rational Rose. I had worked with the Rose tools for many years prior to this and have recently given up independent consulting to join the Rational team. (My praise of the Rose tool, however, would have been made even if I were not a current Rational employee.)
2. A dog ear is the slang term for a bent or folded corner of paper.

From the Back Cover

This is a new edition of the widely acclaimed Building Web Applications with UML. Based on the author's extensive experience as a Web developer, it incorporates helpful reader feedback, identifies and addresses modeling problems unique to page-based Web applications, and offers practical advice and straightforward solutions.

This thoroughly revised Second Edition reflects the latest techniques and issues surrounding the development of software and systems for the Web. You will find:

  • Updated, expanded examples and diagrams
  • Enhanced coverage of the latest Web application security concerns
  • Detailed coverage of proven object technology concepts as applied to the development of Web applications

Robust, scalable, and feature-rich Web applications are attainable. Using the industry-standard Unified Modeling Language (UML) to create designs allows Web application developers to easily integrate them with other systems modeled in UML.

Written for project managers, architects, analysts, designers, and implementers, Building Web Applications with UML, Second Edition , demystifies the challenging aspects of modeling with the Web Application Extension (WAE) for the Unified Modeling Language. Because UML has been widely accepted as the standard language for modeling software systems, it is without question the best option for modeling Web application designs. The WAE extends the UML notation with semantics and constructs that empower you to model Web-specific architectural elements using the Rational Unified Process or an alternative methodology. Furthermore, using UML allows the modeling of Web applications as a part of the complete system and the integration of the business logic that must be reflected in each application.

With this book as your guide, you will be able to gain a clear understanding of how to address the unique problems of modeling the design of page-based Web applications, and more important, how to take your model directly into working code.

Good for Beginner - Not much new for the experienced.
By A Customer
I really don't like giving this book only three stars but it just doesn't deliver much useful information for experienced developers. It is an easy read and it's explanation of a UML notation for the Web is interesting but it is only a very small part of the book - a whitepaper on the subject would have been more than adequate. The first half of the book gives a good but rudimentary overview of Web application development. If you are new to Web development then you will find this section useful. The second half of the book also gives a good but very simplistic overview of the object-oriented development process. Once again, if you want a nice high level overview of the process then this section is good too. However, I think most people buying this book are going to be looking for more detailed information than this book delivers. Maybe Addison Wesley needs to have a "Beginner" and "Professional" series like Wrox Press does.

UML With Extensions For Server & Client Pages
By David Gurgel
Part I of this book, 25% and 78 pages, is a quick review of HTTP, HTML, and other web technologies. In part II the author proceeds step by step through the typical software engineering phases beginning with requirements definition, illustrating the use of UML tools for the general case of a project where the user interface will be a browser (thick or thin, your choice). Requirements and analysis steps are not particularly heavy with new material; but in the design phase the author nicely extends UML with notations for server pages (ASP, JSP, or other), client pages (HTML, DHTML), forms, framesets, client script objects, etc. There are lots of code shells for the server and the client. The author is clearly a programmer as well as an architect and modeler.
Two of the four appendices are very useful. One summarizes the extensions. Another provides all of the UML diagrams and even code outlines for a small sample project.
The book is heavier on the Microsoft technologies than Java, and it's too bad that the book predates .NET. The concepts are still useful and with some thought can be extended to the richer environment presented by .NET.
Since many projects start with an inflexible constraint that says the user interface will be a browser connecting to an Internet server, someone working on such a project might as well was have his UML reference in a Web flavor. I am aware of only one other book with this specific purpose, and it is for Java and out of date.
Some new concepts, good writing, lots of UML diagrams, and lots of code shells give it four stars.

Huge disappointment.
By Dmitriy
Looking into reviews for this book I decided to buy it without any doubts. I just finished this book and I can tell you that in my opinion this book is very poor and condensed version of "Applying UML and Patterns" by Craig Larman (which I just addore) and "Web Master in Nutshell" (which is pretty good and solid reference/introduction into web related technologies). If you read both these books don't spend your money on this one because you won't find anything new. Cheers.
