Genny finally got her happy ever after, but she did not seem the same as she was with Drew. He was her true love she said....... She was feisty, bold, and able to stand on her own. Left with many questions and not truly satisfied with the ending, it just didn't seem to fit. Genny was not as strong when she awoke from her coma, I enjoyed this book and this series, but it just seemed Genny was a different character in the end, not the woman who had loved and lost 9 times. The ending was a little disappointing, but I still recommend this book and series to anyone. Maybe the author was ready to move on.

Not my favorite in the series (Spoilers!!!)

I have loved this series from the beginning. However, I really thought that this book was only okay. The ending seemed rushed and juggled. She thought herself in love with the Duke but she had no problem falling in love with Michael. She had learned all sorts of lessons (ie: the titles!!) and you really didn't get to see any of that. I was expecting even a descendent of the Duke if she did bring Ginny back to the future, but this seemed extremely stilted. She has no memory of the events except for dreams and while she maintained the skills she learned I was really hoping she would maintain the lessons she learned. Also, the first 3/4 of the book left a ton of questions (what happened with the orphanage etc) and it seemed like in the last 1/4 of the book she simply changed her mind. I still loved the series - and will continue to re-read the first few books and look forward to others by this author- however, I would not read this one again.

Sad to see the series end!

I loved Ginny and enjoyed her many experiences. I am very happy for her to finally have her own happy ending. I have read many different books from many authors, but I just thoroughly enjoyed reading Jennifer Connors' books. Her books were written with fluidity, creativeness, sadness and romance. You always cheered for Ginny to find that one true love for her alter egos. I could not wait to read the next instalment and what adventure she was going to have. I am a sucker for historical romances and for Jennifer to incorporate a current female into a female from the past was so exciting. I look forward to her new books and hope she will bring back some characters from this series.

Even the Bolsheviks, who categorized the circumpolar foragers as "authentic proletarians," were repeatedly puzzled by the "peoples from the late Neolithic period who, by virtue of their extreme backwardness, cannot keep up either economically or culturally with the furious speed of the emerging socialist society."

Whether described as brutes, aliens, or endangered indigenous populations, the so-called small peoples of the north have consistently remained a point of contrast for speculations on Russian identity and a convenient testing ground for policies and images that grew out of these speculations. In Arctic Mirrors, a vividly rendered history of circumpolar peoples in the Russian empire and the Russian mind, Yuri Slezkine offers the first in-depth interpretation of this relationship. No other book in any language links the history of a colonized non-Russian people to the full sweep of Russian intellectual and cultural history. Enhancing his account with vintage prints and photographs, Slezkine reenacts the procession of Russian fur traders, missionaries, tsarist bureaucrats, radical intellectuals, professional ethnographers, and commissars who struggled to reform and conceptualize this most "alien" of their subject populations.

Slezkine reconstructs from a vast range of sources the successive official policies and prevailing attitudes toward the northern peoples, interweaving the resonant narratives of Russian and indigenous contemporaries with the extravagant images of popular Russian fiction. As he examines the many ironies and ambivalences involved in successive Russian attempts to overcome northern—and hence their own—otherness, Slezkine explores the wider issues of ethnic identity, cultural change, nationalist rhetoric, and not-so European colonialism.

The "small peoples" are the 26 indigenous ethnic groups of the Arctic tundra and subarctic taiga whose traditions lie in hunting, trapping, fishing, and reindeer herding. Historian Slezkine studies the relationships between these groups and the Russians, who entered their land in the 11th century, colonized it, and transformed it over the centuries thereafter. By examining these circumpolar peoples through Russian historical documents and literary accounts, Slezkine brings out images that become reflections of the Russians themselves. He is interested in both the political and intellectual nature of the encounter and seeks to reveal the importance of the complexities of this relationship through history. Since the groundbreaking 1922 silent documentary Nanook of the North, not much has changed in the everyday life of the Alaskan Eskimos. Nor has much changed for the Arctic people of Russia, despite the incursions of many armies, both military and missionary. Despite their obvious primitiveness, the small Russian tribes of the North saw perhaps lesser levels of brutality by the Stalin regime and beyond, and the most obvious reason for this is the weather. Slezkine spends some time on the northerners' ability to cope with the climate, but mostly concentrates on the changing face of the Soviet Union in the microcosm of the northern people: from "savage Indians" to the slow evolution from icebound hunters and trappers to industrialized laborers. Native Siberians as Russian foil

This is a great book. Slezkine has provided us with a comprehensive history of the encounter between the Russians and the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and northwestern Pacific. Based on original archival sources whenever possible, the narrative is thick in detail and rich in analysis. I enjoyed his writing style, but his arguments can be difficult to follow for non-academics. He focuses on the “numerically small” peoples of Siberia, who are often subordinated in accounts which privilege ethnic Russians, Komi and Sakha (Yakut) peoples in the east. Believing that ideas matter, Slezkine grounds the events and policies of his history in the intellectual fashions current at the time. Thus, we get a cultural and intellectual history of conquest and administration structuring the narrative which tacks between the Russian and native Siberian points of view.
Cossacks did not establish any “New Russia” because they did not understand Siberia as a discovery. The Princes of Rus long knew about “Ostiaks” to the east, and sixteenth century empire-building consisted of conquering foreign peoples throughout the continuous Eurasian landmass. There were no breakthroughs across great divides like the Atlantic. At the same time, the conquerors knew they were among foreign peoples, and it was imperative to get the “real” names from the locals. Foreigners were expected to remain foreign; they had only to pay their tribute and express appropriate obsequies to the Tsar, who discouraged the church from converting foreign tribute-payers to Orthodox Russians. Not that Russian conquest was less brutal than Spanish or English conquests elsewhere, but early Russian conquerors’ open-ended world-view did not force new people and territories into closed, Old World categories.
The rules of the relationship changed during the era of Peter the Great. With the coming of the Enlightenment to Russia, “foreigners” (of a different land) became “aliens” (of different birth). Peter’s fascination with western science led to several scientific expeditions into the north and the east to enumerate and classify everything (and every one) under the dominion of the Tsar. Groups were distinguished by language in a typology of peoples that has persisted to the present day. This second encounter “between the Russian and the native northerners was that between perfection and crudity” (p. 56). German anti-primitivism held sway in Russian thought, and the savages were certainly not noble.
By the close of the eighteenth century the increasing currency of the French Encyclopedists in intellectual circles paralleled the rise of Russian sentimentalism, and a different picture of natives emerged. As disease and warfare decimated the tribute payers, they became ennobled and in need of “protection.” Under Alexander I, reformers established the first comprehensive statement of global policy on the natives with the Statute of Alien Administration in Siberia in 1822. Classifying all (non-Russian) peoples into one of three categories (settled, nomadic, or wanderers), this statute structured native status for the next one hundred years.
Arctic Mirrors presents the story of the rise and fall of Russian anthropology for the first time. This is a significant contribution to the history of anthropology as an international discipline. More than half of the book deals with the Soviet period. Slezkine offers a lucid analysis of the surreal logic of Stalinist social policy and social science, where bureaucrats and scientists alike were often forced to recant truths they adamantly defended only months before in order to save their skins. He also traces the current nationalist ideology largely responsible for the breakup of the Soviet Union to the conscious and consistent ethnic policies of Lenin and Stalin, another legacy of romantic nationalism of the nineteenth century.
Slezkine succeeds in presenting the complexities of a complex encounter. The natives of the north are not passive dupes or innocent victims. Arctic Mirrors has already become required reading for anyone interested in the history or anthropology of Siberia, and it will soon establish itself as an invaluable contribution to the growing field of studies on the Newly Independent States. It also points up interesting parallels and contrasts with other European empires in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

A Must read

This must read opens the door on the many 'small' peoples of Russias North, who live in Siberia and have for thousands of years, comparable to the native Americans, they were crushed and moved around in soviet times, wiht many different methods applied to make them 'russian' 'christian' or good 'socialists'. This is an excellent account and a great eye opener to the vastness and diversity of the Russian landscape, a tragedy unto itself but the people will be preserved through accounts such as this.

Siberia as a Problem

In contrast to Forsyth's History of the Native Peoples of Siberia, this is Siberia as seen by the bureaucrats and thinkers who tried to administer and understand it. There are many detailed quotes and anecdotes, but it does not add up to a coherent history. For the beginner, there is not enough background on who and where the peoples were. Students of the soviet period will be interested the the problem of collectivizing nomadic hunters. So: a good backup, but read Forsyth first.

so educatioal and socially relevant

Lawson proves that his approach is "no nonsense" and that he is not trying just to sell you his book over another book on the subject. He details history and approaches to weaving a story and plot and challenges the writer to create character actions that are not able to be questioned as to why those actions were taken. His approach to presenting the social necessity prompting actions that change the lives not only of characters but the world around them is quite informative. Learning that the obligatory scene is not the climax and that what authors choose for the climax usually is not supported by adequate causes for such actions taken is priceless for a developing writer.
I continue to read the book over and over again and always get new insights into the craft of playwriting.

required reading for playwrights and screenwriters

I've never understood why this book isn't more well-known. Lawson was a gifted dramatist, and his Theory and Technique of Playwriting contains a great deal of invaluable, detailed nuts-and-bolts information about the craft that screenwriters and playwrights won't find anywhere else. It may not be a breezy read, but it's every bit as worthwhile as titles by Egri, Field, and others.

Our country is in the midst of a national crisis over PTSD. Great numbers of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have returned suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.��Yet our society still understands very little about what PTSD is and the suffering it causes to those who live with it.��Jackie Kennedy's experience of PTSD is at the heart of my new biography,�Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis: The Untold Story.� It is the reason I decided to write the book.

The story of Jackie's 31 year struggle with PTSD that I was able to detail and document--much of it seen from Jackie's own perspective, often in her own heartbreaking words--affords us an important chance to see up close and in vivid detail just what PTSD means to someone who has had a traumatic experience.��It is also in a real sense a remarkable story of survival, the story of someone fighting for her sanity when no one understood what was wrong, when she was repeatedly under assault by society, and when the trauma was repeated. �

Importantly, this is also a story which puts a name and face we know to the overwhelming reality of the suffering of someone afflicted with post-traumatic stress disorder.� Moreover, her trauma was also a national trauma, a trauma we all witnessed--the assassination of JFK in which Jackie was soaked in her husband's blood and brains.

Thoughtful and ultimately moving account

This is not a standard biography, nor, thank goodness, another account of all the scandals. It is primarily a study of the Kennedy marriage, the assassination, and JBK's struggle to overcome both experiences and to emerge a stronger woman, her own woman.....not an adjunct to a man....as a survivor. It begins tellingly with Jackie at 16 playing the demure, coquettish girl to a pompous older man (probably about 19) who is enlightening her about Petain and France, although she probably knew far more about the subject than he did. She is ready to step out into her adult world of high society but already knew that was not really the life she wanted. The first chapters of the book are about her early years as a deb, her boyfriends, and then her job at the Washington Herald, where she moved into an entirely different world and met JFK, as well as a couple of other men who were to influence her. The marriage is described in all its agony, humiliation, and heartbreak. There are details which I do not recall reading about previously: that two weeks after their "idyllic" honeymoon in Acapulco, JFK wanted her to return home while he stayed a couple of weeks more in California and home at that time was JFK's small bedroom in his parents' house. (Didn't they make plans before the wedding????) There was also the Swedish blonde with whom JFK made plans to see during his life threatening operation spinal operation and the slow recuperation. He even told her and her family that he would divorce Jackie to marry her. All in all, this intelligent, charming charismatic leader comes across as goatish (Leaming's word), thoughtless, unkind, and reprehensible.

What is made evident is that Jackie, despite the trappings of wealth and fame, had a difficult life and experienced a number of humiliations, including that of her parents' divorce and acrimonious relations. JFK's pursuit of other women was just one more burden as well as the humiliating way his family and political cronies disparaged her for her "differences". The loss of two babies, plus an earlier miscarriage only compounded the grief and unhappiness. Leaming's interpretation of her life really begins with the aftermath of the assassination and Jackie's suffering which Leaming equates with PTSD. She recounts Jackie's continual reliving of those few bloody and traumatic seconds which changed her life, her nightmares, her reactions to noise and crowds, her drinking, her thoughts about suicide. All during this time, she also had to contend with LBJ's and RFK's attempt to use her for political purposes. The debacle over the Manchester book is more evidence of Jackie's obsessive desire to be in control. With RFK's assassination, Jackie's feelings of desperation increased as the nightmares began again. Her marriage to Onassis was not so much for the money as for the safety and security she thought he could provide for her and her children. That marriage too ended in humilation, despite the wealth she was able to obtain.

After Onassis' death, Jackie began another stage of her life, perhaps the most successful and fulfilling of all, as an editor. Leaming sees this as the best evidence of her survival and ultimate victory over the trauma of the assassination. The was made possible by her ability to control her surroundings and her life. The tendency to be a control freak may have initially arisen out of her childhood unhappiness but it was given full range in the last years of her life when she had the money. In the end, of course, she could not control the cancer that finally defeated her.

Whether or not the PTSD argument works medically or psychologically in Jackie's case, her experiences of constant flashbacks and nightmares, of depression, certainly have a similarity with those experiences of soldiers who have suffered trauma. When Ted White met with her and then wrote the famous "Camelot" article, what was never published were his notes from that hours-long interview when she relived the assassination over and over again. White was horrified by it all. She was still exhibiting the same type of memory years afterward.

This is a fascinating and thoughtful study of a woman who still has a special place in American history and iconography. It is sympathetic but not fawning. Leaming does not depict Jackie as an innocent, sweet, saint but as a real woman with strengths and weaknesses, virtues and vices. She was intelligent and had meaningful friendships with men as disparate as Robert McNamara, Joseph Alsop, and Harold MacMillan (and these were friendships, not romances). Her letters to them and their replies are quoted, more evidence of her complexity and intelligence.

I read this in two days because I simply could not put it down...a trite statement but true. It is a thoughtful and ultimately moving account of a woman who has been depicted in so many different ways. Leaming's interpretation is that she was ultimately a survivor and she quotes something Jackie said when asked about what she was most proud about in her life. Her response, more or less, was that she was someone who had lived though great difficulties but had emerged relatively sane.

Moving, but incomplete

The familiar events of JBKO's extraordinary life are told through the prism of PTSD, how those 8.5 seconds in the back of a Lincoln Continental changed her life forever. It's a compelling supposition, and makes moments in the former First Lady's life -- like her battles with William Manchester and lawsuit against Ron Gallella -- look less like willful fits of pique and more like a desperate attempt to restore order to her shattered universe.

I also appreciated how Ms. Leaming went all the way back to Jackie's adolescence and her youthful years as a career girl to put her post-Dallas life in sharper relief.

For such a detailed study of the woman's life, I was surprised by omissions. First of all, none of her pre-Onassis romances are examined. How did she feel about Lord Harlech (beyond not wishing to marry him), John Warnecke and Ros Gilpatric (not even mentioned)? What was her relationship with her children like as they grew? How did she (a woman who came to value control over all) respond to her mother's Alzheimer's and her father's/sister's alcoholism? Was she terrified of the genetic component of these conditions, and the dangers they posed to her quest to control her fate?

Those criticisms aside, I appreciate this portrait of a gallant lady, a woman who struggled to overcome the tragedy that threatened to define her.

Bad enough she had to live with that shame while he was alive, now even worse - to watch her children shames as well. .The constant fear of violence confirmed as Martin Luther King was killed followed by her brother in law. I was siting I the car with my parents, when I was about 14& the radio announcer said Jackie Kennedy was going to marry Ari Onassis. And live in Greece. I had no idea who he was, but I was very aware of JFKs assassination & the assassination of RFK & I recall thinking : why wouldn't she want to go live someplace warm, sunny and far away from all this violence?Be safe.

The understandable panic attacks, frantic world traveling to escape - only to come back & realize you couldn't runaway from what she was dealing with. Continuing distrust of everyone, fear for safety of herself and children never stopped. But, the children grew up with none of the public tantrums & drunken antics so common to many of their cousins and other young celebrities today. They competed college, got advance degrees & became a credit to their mother and father. But, more than anything-they were the the final proof that their mother survived and survived In spite of it all.

Jacqueline Kennedy was an American original. She was human, had her faults. But, conducted herself with grace and dignity throughout her life. You would never see her in public with low cut outfits, pants with more holes than fabric, disheveled, screaming at people - as is so common today. You would not see her on Oprah, Dr. Phil or giving interviews to People Magazine.

She gave us dignity and class, grace under pressure. How sad her example of how to behave has become nearly extinct. Wonderful book.

I'm a beginning painter and I used this book to paint portraits (from a photo) of my two little girl cousins for Christmas. Granted, I'm not John Singer Sargent, but the paintings came out much better than I expected. This book, with its clear instructions and logical techniques, gave me the confidence to start painting in the first place.

Good for beginners!

This is a good book for those who have dabbled a little and are ready to move on a stage. As some one who has painted for years, I did hope to find a few more tips/secrets but felt let down. Good colour mixing suggestions for the variety of skin tones.

silva method is great!

I was horrified to see the negative reviews of this book. I took the Silva Mind Control course, and, I must say, I believe that it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. Now free of unhealthy stress and negative limiting belief systems, I am freed up to contribute to my loved ones rather than drag them down. Have you ever had a flash of intuition, a dream which came to pass in reality; perhaps you thought of a person and then two seconds later, you receive a call from them? These little synchronicities, or coincidences, as you might call them, are very common. We all have this ability. The Silva Method is simply a way to learn to trust your intuition so that you can use it to solve problems. What kind of problems? Any kind-because you will use your mind to solve any problem you have, and the Silva Method is mind development. How is it developed? straightforward relaxation, visualization, imagination, and autosuggestion(affirmations). Sorry, no demons and devils are invoked! This is strictly positive stuff! There are a few Silva Method clubs where people meet to meditate together and share ideas, but that's as close as it comes to becoming a cult. I have never been coerced by Silva people-everything is voluntary, and no pressure is applied. Mind Control refers to your ability to control your own brain wave frequencies, and then to use exercises in visualisation and imagination to solve problems. Jose Silva discovered, through empirical analysis, that the alpha brain wave frequency range was the most beneficial one to access, because it is conducive to better relaxation, concentration, recall, genius mentality, and, believe it or not, detecting information at a distance with only the use of your mind. Yes, that's right, you can do it, and quite easily. I realize that statement sounds more like science fiction than science, but science backs up this amazing idea. Even before Jose Silva came along, scientists who studied psychic ability never disputed its reality. Psychic ability is real, and it can be taught-like playing the violin or baseball, the more you practice the better you will get. You may develop 80% accuracy in psychic detection if you practice frequently-few have gotten any better. We know it's o.k. to be imperfect, however. That 80% goes a long way towards solving problems and making the world a better place. Silva practicioners are normal people with positive attitudes. I am eternally grateful to God for granting a troubled young man a method by which he transformed his life from a mess into a beautiful success.

Understanding the Silva Mind Control Method

Anyone who calls Silva Mind Control a cult or implies that the use of these methods is placing oneself above God doesn't understand what they read. Silva Mind Control is a method of Dynamic Meditation and Creative Visualization. It is what Norman Vincent Peale was referring to when he wrote The Power of Positive Thinking. It is what every Olympic and professional athlete, every successful individual does. It is the first step on the road to greatness. There have been countless books written about creative visualization. None of them are as concise in teaching you how to do it as Silva Mind Control. Scientists acknowledge that we only use approximately 5% of our mind. The other 95% lies domant. Silva Mind Control teaches you to use the dormant part of your mind. It teaches you to create your future, rather than be a passive observer. It teaches you to take responsiblity for how your thoughts create your life instead of mistakenly thinking that life happens to you. Positive thoughts attract positive events. Negative thoughts attract negative events. The name Silva Mond Control tells you what it does. It teaches you to control YOUR mind and YOUR life. Silva Mind Control is also a form of behavior modification, replacing negative thoughts and feelings with positive thoughts and feelings. Healthy people never worry about being sick. Rich people never worry about being poor. Sick and poor people always do. You give power to whatever your mind focuses on. If you always worry about being sick, you will make yourself ill. If you know you are healthy, you will be. Every successful person is a visonary, with the abilty to see the future as they want it to be and the faith to make it happen. One of my ex High School students is an academy award winning actress. There was never any doubt in my mind that she would be, because there was never any doubt in hers. Warning: Silva Mind Control is only for individuals who have the desire to change their lives, the courage to make their dreams come true and the commitment to to make it happen.

Not the same info as in the book

Having read the book back in the early 90's I am aware of its contents and just wanted to warn others that the book and this audio version are very different. After having attended a Silva Seminar (which I highly recommend), this year, I decided to purchase this book again. However, it was out of print so I purchased this audio version. This audio version is completely different from the book. There are methods and techniques in the book that are not covered in the audio version. Specifically one called the Center Stage Technique which I used in my early 20's to successfully manifest my first car. Just a heads up. Ebay may have the book available for an affordable price.
