This book is a gentle reminder of the true reason that we celebrate Christmas. Lucado writes in warm & inviting manner, he explains the birth of Christ and how its relevant to all people, without coming off as if he is lecturing. The book talks about God's love and why it was necessary for Christ to be here. It's a good book to remind you of what is important this holiday season. The book is filled with beautiful images like the one on the front cover. It's a book worth having. The book can also be used by anyone who wants to know more about Christ and why he came.

Not enough detail to really run a first event. There aren't any tools like timelines or checklists to help. I think professional timing is a much bigger expense than he makes it out.

A MUST for planning your first 5K!

I work for a local non profit and we were brainstorming recently about having a 5K/10K race as a fundraiser for our organization. None of us had any knowledge of planning such an event. Ironically, during this timeframe of brainstorming, I came across Ryan Stefonick's book, "The Event Director's Guide: How to host a 5K Run and earn Thousands for Profit" via a Facebook post promoting it.
I found the book to be extremely thorough, detail oriented and an excellent resource for someone who has never planned a 5K. So many valid points were discussed and things you would not think to think of for a 5K. It involves a lot of detail planning, especially in the early stages, in order for it to be a success.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone, especially a nonprofit, who is thinking about putting on a 5K event.
This book will definitely be our guideline and go to resource to plan our 5K.

Where has this book been all my life?

I'm an experienced musician with a lot of years under my belt playing many styles of music. This includes faking my way through more than a few dinner sets, during which I've always been unhappy with my comping, specifically with regard to my voicings.

I picked this book up two days ago at this writing, and I finally feel like I'm improving. And even better, I feel like I'm understanding WHY I'm improving. This book starts you off at the basics. Having grown up playing the Beatles songbook, I was already comfortable with traditional chord builds, which is how this book leads you in. For me, the real action began at chapter 10, but this isn't to say the beginning of the book isn't valuable. Beginners who are interested in jazz voicings will find practical and applicable information and exercises in every chapter, starting with triads, moving to sevenths and beyond. Siskind doesn't try to impress you with insider jargon. He writes in a way that makes you believe he wants you to learn what he's teaching.

Also really nice in this volume is the inclusion of accompaniment tracks, accessible through Hal Leonard's online library. You can play the individual tracks through the site, or download the whole collection at once. Every chapter except Chapter 1 includes tracks, which are labeled as "unrealized" and "realized." On the unrealized versions, you can play along with a small ensemble - drums, bass, and a couple of instrumentalists. The realized versions include a suggested (and notated) piano comping part. What's really nice about the realized tracks is that, besides simply allowing you to check your own choices, you can also hear how you're going to sound after putting a little time in. It's a nice motivator!

The unrealized tracks are even more important, because they allow you to exercise the information in each chapter. Chapters include two or three practice tracks for you to work with. Really nice bonus, and one of the reasons I decided to give the book a try.

Had I known how good the text and instruction was, I would've bought it even without the tracks. If you're less than thrilled with your comping chops, read this book. It's hard for me to say if really experienced jazz players will find this book useful, because I'm not one. But I think my next dinner set will sound a lot better, and will be a lot more fun for me!

Great Story for Readers of All Ages!

I just finished reading “The Education of Little Tree” for the second time and I highly recommend it to people of all ages. Its charm lies in its point of view: an Indian boy sharing what he’s learned of the world around him through adventures with his Cherokee grandparents in the Tennessee mountains of Depression era America. We get the child’s impression of local characters, of bloviating politicians, of the illegal whiskey trade and of the casual prejudice of white people (which he often poignantly misinterprets). There are laugh-out-loud scenes, as when two bootleggers from the city undergo a hilarious hazing into the ways of the mountains. There are also tear-inducing scenes, as when Little Tree is taken from his grandparents by the heartless social work bureaucracy.

Through all of Little Tree’s adventures, the reader learns along with him. It’s a fun, touching and memorable journey. “The Education of Little Tree” is a wonderful book to share with friends of all ages. I’ve made a point of giving it to friends who are not big readers because it is so easy to read, and Little Tree’s adventures immediately draw them into the story. It makes reading fun and also conveys many important lessons about people, life and the natural world we inhabit. I love this book, and the movie they made from it is also outstanding.

Worthy of Being Called a Classic

Generally, I find it helpful to know something of an author prior to reading their work. I like to know something about their history and life and see if I can find those threads in what I am reading. Here, though, the author's backstory is puzzling. Carter, whose real name was Asa Earl Carter, was a Ku Klux Klan member and sometime author. His writings are puzzling in light of his beliefs and the way he lived his life.

In this story, Little Tree is a five-year old boy whose parents have just died. He goes to live with his Cherokee grandparents in the hills of Tennessee. His grandparents are the descendants of those who refused to walk the Trail of Tears and instead hid in the mountains and continued their way of life as best they could. The story of Little Tree and his grandfather was so amazing and so beautiful. Because I come from a rural mountain way of life, reading of the closeness of the boy with his grandparents was so tender and touching for me. I cried at several points through the book and sobbed the last few chapters. This is an intergenerational story of heartache, traditions, ways of life and ancient wisdoms--it is a classic in every sense and deserves that rating. Carter tells of Little Tree's education in his native American heritage, in how to live with a mountain, and the important of family. Yet, the book is never one that preaches, just tells a story about a boy and his family that you desperately wished had been true. In short, I loved every word, in spite of the author and his intentions--if he had any.

I suppose, in regards to the author, I prefer to think this work of beauty in some way apologizes for his hatred in life, even if he didn't mean it to be that way. The work is so hauntingly beautiful and paints such a touching tender portrait of a lost way of life. Maybe Carter's soul wasn't all bad, just torn and conflicted--trying to bridge between how he grew up and a larger truth about life. That's what I'm walking away with.

The goal of this book is to describe a way of managing a technology acquisition project that will facilitate the decision-making process so that you select the right vendor, with the right technology, for your business. The book will also discuss how to implement and operate the technology once you have selected the vendor.

Early in my career, I managed several software development projects. Then one day, I was asked to manage a project to acquire technology. I searched everywhere looking for information on how to manage this type of project. I perused bookstores, libraries, magazines, and the Internet looking for anything I could find on the subject. I found many books on the topics of project management, negotiation, outsourcing, software development, government technology acquisition, and business acquisition. But there was nothing that specifically addressed these topics in the context of acquiring technology for a typical business. I was forced to read several books on the topics listed above in order to extract the information that would help me manage this type of project successfully. I eventually ended up creating my own project life cycle. After applying this project life cycle to several successful technology acquisition projects, I decided to share my findings with other project managers who are faced with the same challenge I faced. I am writing the book I wish I had before managing my first technology acquisition.

I have tried to keep the information presented in this book at a level where it will be most useful to an experienced project manager who is new to managing a technology acquisition project. However, if you have ten years' experience in managing technology acquisitions, you shouldn't jump to the conclusion that there is nothing here for you.

This is not a book about managing government technology acquisitions or $100M+ technology acquisitions. An experienced project manager who has never managed a technology acquisition will not likely get a chance to manage an acquisition of more than $10M on their first project of this type. Additionally, a process this extensive would be difficult to justify on an acquisition of less than $500K. This book is targeted at the experienced project manager who will be, or is, managing his first technology acquisition of $500K to $10M. That said, there is also value for anyone who is involved with a technology acquisition.

This could include executive management, IT management, project stakeholders, project sponsors, project teams, vendors, implementation teams, support teams, or any others who are impacted in some way by a technology acquisition project.

This is a great resource book

Technology Acquisition: Buying the Future of Your Business is a great book for establishing procurement best practices or confirming existing practices. This book is not a high-level overview but provides you with detailed step-by-step procedures, case studies, and a wealth of examples. As a consultant, each company that I work with is different and this book has helped me to establish a complete procurement cycle with the client. Many companies, it seems, do not have a cradle to grave procurement practice and therefore do not understand what a project manager should be responsible for. This book gives you a starting place. Also, it is evident that the author is speaking from experience - he has done what is in the book and the examples demonstrate a real working knowledge of the topic. I highly recommend this to any person starting a new project.

Taking his cue from his father, a man with "a very fertile, nearly inexhaustible imagination, totally dedicated to inventing past lives," Eire looks beyond the literal to see the mythological themes inherent in the epic struggle for identity that each of our lives represents. Into this fantastic idyll comes Castro-"Beelzebub, Herod, and the Seven-Headed Beast of the Apocalypse rolled into one"-overthrowing the Batista regime at the very end of 1958 and sweeping away everything that the author holds dear. A world that had been bursting with complicated, colorful meaning is replaced with the monotony of Castro's rhetoric and terrorizing "reform." Symbols of Jesus that had once provided spiritual enlightenment by popping up in the author's premonitions and dreams were now literally being demolished and destroyed by a government that has outlawed religion. The final cataclysm comes when Eire and his brother, still young boys, are shipped off to the United States to seek safety and a better life (another paradise, perhaps). They never see their father again.As painful as Eire's journey has been, his ability to see tragedy and suffering as a constant source of redemption is what makes this book so powerful. Where his father believed that we live many lives in different bodies, Eire sees his own life as a series of deaths within the same body. "Dying can be beautiful," he writes, "And waking up is even more beautiful. Even when the world has changed." Taking his cue from his beloved Jesus, the author believes that we repeatedly die for our sins and are reborn into a new awareness of paradise. How fortunate for readers, then, that by way of Eire's "confessions," they too will be able to renew their souls through his transcendent words.

Eire, now a professor of history and religion at Yale, was one of them. His deeply moving memoir describes his life before Castro, among the aristocracy of old Cuba—his father, a judge, believed himself to be the reincarnation of Louis XVI—and, later, in America, where he turned from a child of privilege into a Lost Boy. Eire's tone is so urgent and so vividly personal (he is even nostalgic about Havana's beautiful blue clouds of DDT) that his unsparing indictments of practically everyone concerned, including himself, seem all the more remarkable.

Eire's complex, introspective memoir begins the day his world changed: when Castro's troops sent President Batista into exile far from Cuba in 1959. The son of a judge who believed himself to be Louis XVI reincarnated, Carlos, along with his older brother, Tony, spent his days playing with fireworks and lizards. He attended an elite school, where Batista's children were his classmates. Carlos' biggest worries were the disapproving stares he received from a portrait of Maria Theresa of Austria and Jesus, who would sometimes appear in the window to him. All of that changed when Castro came to power; suddenly, attending a prestigious school or driving a classy car was dangerous. The Eire family remained in Cuba even as others left, until finally Eire's parents sent Carlos and Tony to Florida, where a very different life awaited them. Years passed before their mother joined them, but Carlos never saw his father again. Memories, memories!

We hear the figure of six million dead Jews in the Hollocaust and we can't grasp it. We read Ann Frank and we weep. Sometimes tragedies that overwhelm us in macroeconomic terms, become reality when viewed through the eyes of one individual. Carlos Eire has been able to do this.

Like Mr. Eire I grew up in Havana in the 50's. I too was a Pedro Pan in the 60's. I too came without a penny and have been able to make my way in this wonderful new land. Each of his "facts" and memories correspond to my facts and memories of the same period. The book is as true to life as it can be for me and a great refresher for others who may have lived through similar times. For those not familiar with this period, the careful details he enumerates bring to life a society that has been gone for half a century. I commend the author on this great work.

Waiting for Snow in Havana - an immigrant's story. Review

I thought the book was a bit long, and at times rambling, jumping back and forth between countries and times, but it is really a wonderful
story of a little boy who's life (at times hysterically funny, at others, incredibly sad) before, during and after Castro's revolution. After reading
this, it's easy to see why Cubans who live in Miami don't trust the current state of their old country under Fidel's brother's rule. The author was
very forthright about how he felt about The Revolution, and how it affected his Mother, who understood what was happening and did everything she could to get her two sons out of Cuba to have a better life, and his Father, who just couldn't give up what he knew and hated...I knew nothing about the author until I read about him at the end of the book. He is a real testament to immigrants who come to America, assimilate, and go on to achieve great things in life. It's an inspiring story, but just could have been a little shorter in length...the strength of his story wouldn't have been diminished.

Picture perfect view of an upper middle class youth living in ...

Picture perfect view of an upper middle class youth living in Havana's Miramar, son of a judge and a worrying Cuban mother, and attending the best social clubs like Havana Yacht Club. For someone like me, a Cuban, the scenes are familiar in the extreme, and Eire does a fantastic job of showing them to the reader. Carlos is the young kid growing up, and being a kid, together with friends who love firecrackers and hate lizards. The story is ultimately very humorous and insightful as to what Cubans of that generation were like although the author shows an intimate knowledge of what social strata were like, especially the pretense among white Cubans that blacks were not suffering discrimination in the country; it was a soft, benevolent discrimination. Fidel and Che come to the picture, and everyone in Havana, in Cuba, realizes there is snow in the North, the USA, and they wait for their turn to escape to the snow. I found this book irresistible, impossible to put down. Read it. You will not be sorry.
