In Troubling Freedom Natasha Lightfoot tells the story of how Antigua's newly freed black working people struggled to realize freedom in their everyday lives, prior to and in the decades following emancipation. She presents freedpeople's efforts to form an efficient workforce, acquire property, secure housing, worship, and build independent communities in response to elite prescriptions for acceptable behavior and oppression. Despite its continued efforts, Antigua's black population failed to convince whites that its members were worthy of full economic and political inclusion. By highlighting the diverse ways freedpeople defined and created freedom through quotidian acts of survival and occasional uprisings, Lightfoot complicates conceptions of freedom and the general narrative that landlessness was the primary constraint for newly emancipated slaves in the Caribbean.�

Very "theory" oriented but great read

If you're looking for a quick drawing book you can thumb through on the plane, this isn't it. However if you want a classical approach to drawing and painting theory, complete with very opinionated prose that teaches you the fundamentals of how drawing and painting should be - get this book. On a bookshelf filled with quick fixes and 30-second lessons on the go, Speed's drawing text is a welcome change. You'll read this again and again, gaining more knowledge out of it each time.

The Best Book on Drawing (theory)... Period.

I'm now a professional illustrator and exhibiting fine-artist. But for 17 years... from adolescence on, I was a hobbyist... someone who just loved to draw. It was this book, INGENIOUSLY simple and straightforward in both it's presentation and elucidation of "how to see," which brought me from hobbyist, to professional. It's amazing because the book is about 100 years old (and is STILL in print, which should tell you something); but when you take into account he's passing on information that is 500 years old, gleaned from renaissance artists (it's no coincidence D�rer's sketch is on the cover) I guess 100 years isn't much. You never know, as an artist, when you'll have an "Aha!" moment and finally understand something which previously eluded you... that said, I learned more from reading this book than from thumbing through any of the other 50+ art-technique books in my collection (this is a book to be read... primarily text, not primarily illustrations). The information is timeless. The instruction is solid. Get this book. If like me, you're self-taught... and you already know how to draw... and are looking to hit the next level, it's invaluable. Or at least it was for me.

It's easy to pontificate and very, very hard to draw. Suspiciously absent from most books on drawing are drawings by the author. But Speed, a journeyman painter whose career bridged the 19th and 20th centuries, drew wonderfully well, and his drawings vindicate his ideas. Additionally, Speed's career embodies the best of the academic tradition and the then-contemporary discoveries of the Impressionists. His assessment of Monet has stood the test of time, as have his splendid instruction on the nuts and bolts of drawing. If you can only have one book on drawing -- and I have a vested interest in this area -- Speed's is the one to get.

This book is called Learning Agile because we really want you to learn agile. We've spent the last 20+ years working with real teams building real software for real users day in and day out. We've also spent the last 10+ years writing books about building software (including two very successful books in the O'Reilly Head First series about managing projects and learning to code). About the Author
Andrew Stellman is a developer, architect, speaker, agile coach, project manager, and expert in building better software. He has over two decades of professional experience building software, and has architected large-scale real-time back end systems, managed large international software teams, been a Vice President at a major investment bank, and consulted for companies, schools, and corporations, including Microsoft, the National Bureau of Economic Research, Bank of America, Notre Dame, and MIT. He's had the privilege of working with some pretty amazing programmers during that time, and likes to think that he's learned a few things from them.

Jennifer Greene is an agile coach, development manager, business analyst, project manager, tester, speaker, and authority on software engineering practices and principles. She's been building software for over twenty years in many different domains including media, finance, and IT consulting. She's worked with teams of excellent developers and testers to tackle tough technical problems and focused her career on finding and fixing the habitual process issues that crop up along the way.

Andrew and Jennifer have been building software and writing about software engineering since 1998. They founded Stellman & Greene Consulting in 2003, and continue to work with software teams every day to build and deliver software to their users. Other O'Reilly titles they've written include Beautiful Teams, Head First C#, Head First PMP, and Applied Software Project Management.

There's a lot of good ideas in "Learning Agile"

There's a lot of good ideas in "Learning Agile", things that have been used for decades but didn't have a flashy name until the Agile group thought of one. But... the book drowns in koolaid while ignoring Agile's failings in:
* cost control / ROI / productivity (having a door is the #1 way to increase an engineer's productivity)
* unending changes that are typically illogical and conflicting
* common team issues that won't be solved
* dishonest comparisons of the worst Waterfall projects versus best Agile projects
* faith over results
* and glossing over programming necessities like Code Refactoring to keep iterative software working over time... while ignoring the large cost that refactoring requires.
That being said, I do recommend this book to everyone that wants to understand more about Agile. It's the least bad of the books out there.
Experienced people should take it with many large grains of salt.
Inexperienced people should be ready to be disappointed when they see this used and abused in reality.

About the Author
Professor Colin Poole is internationally known in the field of thin-layer chromatography and is an editor of the Journal of Chromatography and former editor of the Journal of Planar Chromatography - Modern TLC. 'Cushway and Sewell both have a wealth of experience in incorporating dream work into therapy. Needs proofing and errors corrected

As many other reviewers have said, this book was required for a medical terminology intro course. The book itself is fine for a beginning start regarding bare basics of word roots and anatomy. However there are multiple errors throughout the quiz questions at the back of each chapter, its rather frustrating. There will be answers that are clearly incorrect, as the book even states a different definition that what the "correct" answer should be, and in some fill-in-the-blank parts, the correct choice won't even be on the "pick from" list. Thankfully, my instructor was competent enough to give the correct answers and questions on actual tests. For the next edition, this text needs to be seriously reviewed and proof read.

The book was mostly okay, but I gave it 1 star because there's a section at the back on "Alternative Medicine", which describes Reiki, homeopathy and other known scams, but the book doesn't even question their credibility.
The presence of this section makes it a Quack Book, it should not be part of any objective college course.
Avoid buying this if you can.
Teachers, please don't use trash like this.
If the Quack section is removed in a future edition, I'd give it 3 stars.

Unacceptable number of errors

The program I'm aiming toward requires a 3-credit med terminology course, so I started reading Unlocking Medical Terminology early, before classes launch in a few weeks. So far I have worked through more than half of UTM(2e). My background includes (among other things) an earlier 1-credit medical terminology course, a 5-credit A&P class, and (lapsed) certification as a surgical tech.

The reason I give this text any stars at all is because it introduces some diseases/disorders and terms not covered in an A&P class focusing on normal anatomy/physiology. So there have been some "Hmm, interesting!" moments.

That said, the book is frustrating because of the errors and carelessness. A handful of mistakes are understandable and acceptable in any textbook, but UMT contains more than just a few. Definitions are questionable frequently enough that when meeting an unfamiliar term, my response has become to check an A&P textbook and/or medical dictionary - I have stopped trusting this text. Example - UMT defines rabies as bacterial (the definition states it *twice*, as though once wasn't bad enough...). Hemochromatosis is presented as an "inherited disorder" in UMT, but my (multiple) sources say it can be acquired or inherited. The anatomy of the pericardium is totally hosed -- both the narrative and the definitions pertaining to it.

The definitions, even when essentially correct, often miss the mark, feel "dumbed down", or focus on something not essential to the term in question. Here's an example - Poikilocytosis, according to UMT, is "large, irregularly shaped red blood cells". My sources agree this is a condition defined by irregularly shaped red blood cells, but "large" seems irrelevant, possibly wrong. One subtype of poikilocytosis is the presence of schistocytes, fragmented parts of red blood cells...which by definition are small. A second issue with the UMT definition is that the construction used -- very common in this book - speaks as though the RBCs themselves are "poikilocytosis", while the actual word for these cells is "poikilocytes". In my (very humble) opinion it should read "presence of...irregularly shaped red blood cells", or words to that effect.

Besides questionable definitions, there's plain old carelessness and inconsistency -- e.g., a single term will be decomposed (into root word, prefix and suffix components) two different ways within the same chapter; answer keys to exercises contain (too many!) errors. The front of UMT lists a slew of "reviewers", but it seems hard to believe anyone proofread this book.

It bothers me that material of such poor quality is being used to train people entering medial fields. I plan to talk with the instructor and the department and let them know what I think of this textbook.
